Got out with my dad to go shoot the new gun smell off his custom rifle.

Loads were as follows:
Nosler brass
Federal 215 primer
RL33
Berger 195gr
COAL 3.69"

Started at 87.6 grains and worked up to 88.5 grains.

Gun shoots like a dream....Nathan's beast brake works awesome and recoil is about the equivalent of a 243.

Got it sighted in and then started shooting groups over the chrony. Mostly looking for what the groups showed and trying to find what the max load was in the rifle. We didn't find max today....

87.6 showed just under an inch group and ran 3043, 3043 & 3032 fps. (Bottom group in pic)

88gr was almost identical in grouping and ran 3045, 3060 & 3060 fps. (Group on the left dot)

88.2gr started to look promising....2 touching and one just out. They ran 3063, 3069 & 3067 fps. (Group on the right dot)

88.5gr also looks promising. Dad shanked the first shot pretty bad but the next two were touching. Velocity was 3101, 3133 & 3105 fps. (Group on the top dot)

I'm thinking there is a good accuracy node somewhere between 88.2 and 88.8. Never showed any signs of pressure on the brass or in the bolt lift.

Loaded some extra of the 87.6 load so we could play with the steel at the range. Here's some videos. The look on dad's face when he went from sighted in straight to 1000 yards was priceless.

Even ran it out to a rock face at the back of the range at 1112 yards.....picked a spot and first round hit. It was freaking awesome!

A good day, indeed. That all looks very promising! Some fine shooting.

Awesome first outing. I'll bet there were smiles all around.
3k plus with a 195 is serious.
I apologize if I missed it, but what action and barrel did you end up with?

Outstanding! That rifle is a shooter and the load is going to be a long range hammer.
Nice shooting.

There was a post on the rifle in the rifle forum. It is a defiance deviant hunter action with a bartlein barrel 1:8 twist at 26".

I am curious if anyone has quickload about an estimate of pressure. I was very surprised that 88.5gr of RL33 didn't show any pressure signs in the gun. COAL is 3.69" Berger 195gr bullet. Velocity shown at that load was about 3100fps.

I'll see if I can get dad to measure h2o capacity on a fired case if that will help.

Might want to get a few more parameters (H20 capacity, case length, etc.).

Thanks Mike. I'll see if he can send me H2O capacity. Barrel length is 26".

that's a nice looking rifle , and it looks like it's gonna shoot well too . if I was to build a 7mm something , it would be a 28 nosler set up for the 195's . I'll pm you my address , just in case your Dad decides he doesn't want it .

Hahahaha! You're going to have to take a number and get in line!

H2O capacity for a fired case is 101.5gr. Can someone run a quickload with that and 26" barrel, COAL 3.69", RL33 & 195gr Berger?

Hmmm that's interesting. Thanks for running that. Recorded velocity at a charge of 88.5gr was 3105, 3133, 3103 fps.

So looking at that quickload and what we're seeing I would estimate max load being around 89-90 grains?

Hoping to find a good accuracy load with a velocity between 3100-3150fps.

Some information if you need some.

http://www.longrangehunting.com/forums/ ... ng-159270/

I also adjusted the Ba ( .286 ) to match your average chrono velocity ( 3,110 ), it seems it a bit over max with 88.5 grains. Also remember that velocity is also an indication of pressure even if you don't see any obvious pressure signs.
