280 Ackley

Has anyone used magnum primers in their 280 Ackley and to what success? Also what loads for Nosler 140gr bullets?
just about out of my Nosler trophy grade ammo.

yes you can use mag primers in the 280AI . just start out using them when developing your load . if you would already have a load worked up using standard primers , back the powder charge off ( I'd say to back off one full grain ) and work back up watching your accuracy , and velocity . sometimes a mag primer could be more accurate than a standard primer , sometimes not .

the rules I use for mag primers is ; when using ball powders , when my powder charge is over 60 grains , using a highly compressed powder charge , for use in very cold weather . ** or when it's the only thing available **


I don't load for a 280AI , so I'm of no help on a load for you .

I've never used magnum primers in my Ackley loads, but I would if that's all I had access to. The only 140s I've loaded for it are the Barnes TTSX. Those shot so well that I never tried anything else in that weight. With H4350 I'm getting right around 3200 fps and 0.5 MOA.
I've worked up a load with the 160 AccuBond and Reloder 26 that delivers a hair over 3000 fps and accuracy equal to my 140 TTSX load.

My 280 Ackley is a beanfield rifle wearing a 28" 8 twist PacNor barrel. The long barrel helps digest slow burning powders and so I can get 3200 fps with 140NAB and 3000 with 160NAB and sub-MOA accuracy at 400 yds. if I do my part. For the most part I use Fed 210M primers in my loads except when I tried some 4000MR powder where I switched to Rem 9 1/2M primers. If my velocity SD is single digit, I conclude that powder ignition is solid and consistent. If it's over 20, I try a hotter primer to see if that results in a reduction of the SD.

I've done it. Rifle 280AI,27" lilja,1/9 twist, barrel,160gr AB,Fed 215,IMR-7828. I used Nosler data and their start load was
57.5gr/IMR-7828,Fed 210,2836 fps and max was 61.5gr/IMR-7828,3043fps.

I used F-210 to start with 57.5gr /IMR-7827 @2916fps, When I switch to Fed 215 Primer same load velocity was 2915fps.
My last test load Fed 210/ 60.5gr/IMR-7828 @3058fps. Fed 215 same load was 3094fps. I load at the range so I can reload same case both primers. I used Nosler brass.


That load I posted last year using 280AI,175gr ABLR ,R-26.Peterson brass, got good bull 2nd rifle season here.

I use Federal GM215M primers in 2 280AI rifles. Both produce sub MOA accuracy out to 800 yards.
RL22 is the go to powder for both.

Looks like a lot of different powders used. Nosler is recommending IRC 4831 as their most accurate powder.

I had good accuracy with IMR4831 but my best accuracy has been with RL22 and Magnum primers.
My rifle is a custom 700 with a Hart 24" #5 and shoots 120-160 gr bullets consistently in the .3's.
The best group I ever shot was with the 168 gr ABLR and IMR7828 SSC, that group went .056".

I think I'll try the 4831 as that is what I can find. My rifle is a custom built Nosler. I was using their Trophy Grade ammo and getting .5 at a 100. Rifle has a break and recoil is minimum. I'll be using Nosler 140's. I would like to try Alliant powder and see what happens. I use RL17 in my 6.5 Creedmoor with 140 Hornady ELD with basically one hole groups fired through a Tikka precision rifle.
