My buddy has a 280 Rem and wants to start reloading for it. He has 140gr Sierra BT bullets and IMR 4831SC powder. Any hints or tips? I plan on going to his place to help him get rolling with this new hobby.

Nothing for that powder but with IMR-4350 52.5 gr is 2830 outta a 22" barrel and 1/4 MOA with plenty of room to improving velocity wise in my rifle. I could go up to probably 57.5 gr but she shoots so well!

I switched to AB 160's in the .280 Rem because I could get 3000 fps from them with IMR 7828 SSC and sub-MOA accuracy, so why use anything else?

The 280 Rem is a real under rated cartridge. When loaded to the same pressure levels as the 270 Win, it is tough to beat for NA big game.
A 140 gr at 2900-3000 fps kills WT deer like a lighting bolt.

The best powders are H4831SC, IMR 4831, IMR 4350 and RL 19.

Great cartridge, and the bullet/powder combination you suggest will give you great performance.

I was using 58.0 frs of IMR 7828 SSC and Federal Match Mag 215 Primers. The velocity was 3007 fps and the pressure signs were negative. This was with 160 Nosler Accubonds. I have not cycled cases through more than 3 reloadings because the rifle now is with my grandson. Pressure signs and bolt lift were normal, no ejector marks.

However, this is a maximum load and should be approached from below.

I used 54.0 grs. of IMR4350 and 140 gr. Partitions in my 280 and they were fantastic. In the 22" barrel on my 700 Mountain Rifle it chronographed at 2940fps.

I like H4831SC with 150-grain Partitions. Five shots under one inch pretty consistently.

58 grs H4831SC and a 139 Hornady BTSP is my go to load in my 280.
Kills deer and hogs like the Hammer of Thor.

I'm using 54 gr of IMR-4831 with a ballistic tip getting 3000 fps muzzel vel. I was using H4831SC with a 140 gr AccuBond and tried some IMR-4350 and with a little work it looks like thats going to be the powder of choice for that bullet.

IMR-4831 with the 145gr Speer boat tail was my favorite load for many years, B.C around .5 with a muzzle velocity around 3000fps. IMR-7828ssc is a real charm with 150gr and heavier bullets. Like the 270 and 30-06, it's hard to argue the capabilities of the 280 Rem in just about any hunting situation. The 175gr Partition at 2750fps is quite the posthole digger!

I have been shooting 160 gr Gamekings with good accuracy. I also ordered a bunch of 162 gr Hornady Interlocks from Midway, There are on the blem sale. Good deal.

I bought a box of 150 gr E-tips from SPS. Am anxious to find time to range these.

I have enjoy my new 280. Looking forward to fall black bear.
