I just picked up a very nice rem 700 mtn rifle in 280-...I wanted a lighter rig than my Ruger 300 mag.......
I want to use it for deer mostly, but am looking for a varmint load, just wondering if anybody here uses the same thing and what would you recommend as a good bullet/weight combo

Mine is a Ruger, but it shoots the 140 Ballistic Tips very well. You could try the Hornady 100 gr hollow points for varmints but they are very short bullets and may not stabilize. That mountain rifle is pretty light as well and won't stand up to much prairie doggin', but would make an excellent choice for calling in coyotes.

Congrats on the .280!! I picked a Ruger 77 MKII with a 22" barrel up in August. I have not worked up any varmint loads, sorry.

I have came up with two good hunting loads. Nosler brass in both; Load #1 is the Hornady 139 grain SST and H4831SC. Five shot groups = 1". Load #2 is the Nosler 160 grain AccuBond and Reloder 19. Four shot groups = .60"

I have really enjoyed the .280 and the guys on here have given me a wealth of information.

Congratulations on your 280 Rem.
Try the 140 gr BT with 57.0 grs RL19, it will cover anything up to the size of Caribou.

You can also use the 120 gr BT up to deer sized game. Keep your impact velocities below 3000 fps and you will be fine.

I have the same gun,like it alot.I use r-22 for 140 and 160 accubonds.140 for deer and 160 for elk.It is a whole lighter than my m700 7mm mag.

Thanks fellas....I wish i woulda got her sighted in like I had planned this AM..a buddy missed a chance at really nice whitey..was about 200 yards away broadside...all I had was a 243 with 58 grain Vmax's...Iwatched the buck for a good 12 seconds, all the time wondering what my bud was doing.....he was looking at the smaller 2 point.. ...didn't even see the big fella...one of those days i tell ya...LOL

57 grns of RL 19 and any of the Nosler 140 are hard to beat good velocity and accuracy is some times to good to be true and for a varmint load you could try the 120 gr bt and 57.5 gr of RL 19. enjoy your 280 :)

If you want to shoot vermin with your 280 Rem try loading up some Hornady 120gr V-Max. You will get some extreme terminal performance. Far better than you'll see with 120gr-140gr B-Tips and similar bullets.

I'm loading up 56.0 grains of RL19 with a 140 grain Ballistic Tip, R-P brass, Rem 9 1/2 primer. The accuracy was good so stopped there...

I havent gotten to play with my new 280 much but I think I have found my varmint load already. 59 grains of H4350 behind a 120 grain Vmax does 3200 fps and groups under 1" for 5 shots.

Both my Remington 700 Mtn Rifle and my Ruger 1B in 280 shoot very tight groups with Sierra 140 gr GameKings and 55.5 grs of IMR-4350. I would not recommend starting with this load but I see no pressure signs from either rifle. I'm using Remington brass and Winchester WLR primers.
