50 rounds into my new barrel from Pac Nor. Workin on loads for spike season.
Seems this one will do the job! Chrony didn't like the late light, but will try again in the morning.
They should be moving high 2900s; may be breakin 3k.

That looks like a pretty good load. Now, to find that spiker. "Here, elk. Come on, fellow." God get 'em.

That will smack an elk for sure! As that barrel gets a bit more broke in that group should shrink down a bit as well! Nice work.

Shot the 150 into some milk jugs today @ 100yds. Impact should have been around 2760fps per Quickload. Completely penetrated 5 jugs. There was a shrapnel wound in the 6th and a flat lead disc that I'm assuming is from the tip portion in the fourth jug. Didn't recover the bullet as it started to veer in the fourth jug and came out of the 5th in such a manner as to miss the 6th.

More to come

A friend of mine has used the 150 Partition in his 280 Remington on goats and moose with great results, you have yourself a great elk load.

The 284 Win is looking good. Nice shooting.
The 150 gr PT will do the job for you.

ATM, great work with that 284! Looks like a super combo and should handle elk excellent. Pretty cool to see folks using the 150gr PT. Really the outcast with the best of the 140 and 160's! That barrel is going to be sweet when it's done! What a great shooter. Scotty

Thanks guys, I'm thinkin it ought to do just fine as well. I must say that I was a bit surprised when we walked up to the jugs and it had come clean through number 5. The first 3 were completely blown in half and the fourth had big splits in it, so I'm sure it expanded well too.

I will also try 140 and 160 AB's in this gun, but the partitions were available locally while the others were not. Since my barrel was a bit delayed, I really wanted to get to work and there's nothing to not like in a Partition right  ! I thought 150's would be a nice compromise between the two AB's.

Gonna be shooting some 140 BT's through it this week to help get some more rounds downrange and see if my groups keep tightening.

One thing I've noticed with the custom barrel is that it cleans extremely easy compared to other barrels I've shot. Another thing that has been pretty consistent is that after cleaning, my first 5-7 rounds seem to "walk" around a little, or migrate if you will for about an inch before settling down and printing the last 5-3 out of ten in a nice little cluster. I'm far enough along now that I'm just gonna shoot it for a bit before I clean it again and see if that phenomenon is indeed associated with a clean barrel, or with a low total round count in the new barrel.

I'll continue to post progress reports as I work through things. Hopefully the next one will include a proper "break-in" with a spiker down

First experience with a custom barrel?

Good stuff aren't they? Yes, they tend to resist fouling better, and shoot well even with a lot of rounds downrange between cleaning. Looks like you've got a great load there. I'd hunt that thing for elk, bear or deer, no problem!

What kind of velocity are you seeing at the muzzle?

I'm actually very close to what Quickload says I should be doing with 52gr RL-17 at a COL of 2.90. This puts me .030 off the lands and gives a muzzle velocity of about 2950 avg. A little high on the ES for my liking at around 60fps, but this is not a long range load and accuracy is great considering the time I've had for load development.

I plan on shooting at 300 yds today to check my drop and will put one into some more jugs at that distance also.

Just saw your post Guy,

Yes, it is my first custom
I followed Pac Nor's break in recommendation including a few ten shot/clean strings after the 3's. I figured I'd let it go a while and see how it responded; groups are tightening up a bit so I'm going with it.

May get to hunt in the snow with it this weekend! Hope we can get on a spike and really test those 150's

Good luck with the spikers! They were more elusive than bigger bulls for me last week! Scotty
