Hi Guys,

Just a quick one. I have just recently purchased my first 30-06 and took it to the range today. I was just breaking it in and it is showing enormous promise. I loaded 55 grains of H4350 behind some left over Hornady 178 ELDM's. 9 shots chronographed at an average of 2,722fps with an sd of 6.3fps. Accuracy was really nice. Barrel length is 26 inches. I was wondering how much harder I can lean on this load.

I also have a bunch of 165NBT's loaded behind H4350 and was wondering what the pressure and velocity looks like if you push to 65,000psi and if it really makes much difference compared to 60,000psi? I was planning on swapping out the NBT's to accubonds depending on the game I was chasing.

Other powders I have available to me are Varget, H4831sc, H1000.

Any thoughts or advice from those who have used the 30-06 would be greatly appreciated. From my first little shoot today, I am wondering why it has taken me so long to own one.

Thanks for any help.

For several years I made the 165 gr Nosler Ballistic Tip and H4350 my standard load for the 30-06 cartridge. One memorable season I used it on:

Black bear at about 325 yards, one shot kill, recovered the jacket from the off-side hide after a raking shot through the vitals.

Mule deer buck at about 140 yards, facing towards me shot. Instant drop but had to apply a finisher as the first had only gone through one lung. Recovered the bullet from the off-side flank and weighed 106 grains.
1754570352992.jpeg
Pronghorn antelope broadside at about 245 yards through both shoulders, exit.

Large cow elk at about 340 yards. Through the shoulder blade and destroyed both lungs. Very quick kill, she stumbled downhill maybe twenty yards. Lost the bullet during field dressing.

MV was 2940 fps using 59 grains of H4350. That is a maximum charge according to Hodgdon. Accuracy was very good, easily sub MOA from my 24" Remington 700 CDL. I always kept the rifle zeroed at 200 yards with this load and felt confident in it up close or out to 400 yards or so. Last time I checked a string of fire, I saw a standard deviation of 9 fps.

Ultimate Reloader published my story online: https://ultimatereloader.com/2021/08/23/is-30-06-boring-for-big-game-hunting-results/

H4350 and the 30-06 work very well together, particularly with the 165/168 grain bullets. I only deviated from that load out of curiosity or for Alaska when I wanted a much heavier bullet. Then I stayed with H4350 but chose the deep penetrating 200 grain Partition. Since then I've used various other loads and have learned to respect Ramshot Hunter powder as well.

Regards, Guy

I’ve had my 06 since I was 13, that’s something like 57years. I don’t hunt her much anymore but I always keep it ready and in all honesty I keep the magazine loaded with the rifle locked in the safe in case I need to make a shot across ours or the neighbors pasture.
Some recent data; 63.6/180 AB with Rl 26 gave 2918
62.5 Rl 22 /180 tsx gave 2928 an SD of 5.7
I don’t have much Rl 22 left so I only fired four shots the other day. Wood stock with no bedding work it’s not uncommon to adjust her a little year to year.
Good luck with your new 06, great cartridge.

Not bad shooting from such an antiquated cartridge lacking all the "inherently accurate" updates of the cartridges of the last decade.

Right now I have mine set up with 212 ELD x at 2600 fps using Staball 6.5. Maybe for elk season. It really likes 150 and 180 BT's too with Imr 4350.

I shoot a Ruger 1B in 30-06 that has a 26" barrel. It loves 165 gr. Nosler Partitions and Accubonds using IMR4350. H4350 which you are using would be fantastic also and I would just stay with that since your rifle seems to really like it.
With 57.4 grs. of IMR4350 and a 165 gr. AccuBond i get 2940 fps with that load. There are other powders that would probably let me get more velocity, but man does it shoot. I only have a fixed 4x Leupold for the scope on this rifle but I sure like it.

It'll get you an extra 80 (eighty) fps. Can't see that you're gaining much.

Thank you everyone for your replies and Dr Mike for the QL data. I kind of feel late to the party with this century plus year old cartridge. Modern rifles, powders and bullets certainly add some spice to the old girl.

Guy I did watch that Ultimate Reloader episode, I enjoyed it a lot. Gavin is a clever dude and that was one great year for you, congrats on the many successful hunts. Great pics too.

I have just about finished reading W.D.M Bell’s The Wanderings of an Elephant Hunter. With what he accomplished with a 7x57 and getting close to game makes you appreciate sometimes just how much hype there is around today’s cartridges.

Great cartridge and tons of suitable powders. You already are using one of the best for the grand old warhorse. My dad loved IMR4350 with 150gr Ballistic Tips. Ive been partial to H4350 and 150gr Accubonds, Partitions or Interbonds and my buddy likes Staball 6.5 with 150gr Interbonds. Between the three of us, a pile of deer and hogs have fallen to those loads. Played around with 165gr Accubonds too using IMR/H4350. All good results!
