Didn't have as much time to spend with the .30-06 as I was hoping for. Did manage to put 10 rounds through it though.

60 gr Reloader 22, 180 gr Sierra SPBT Gamekings = 2730 fps from the new 24" 700 CDL.

Accuracy was good - hovering a bit over one MOA - and I was shooting prone, unsupported. Didn't do any serious group shooting, just enough to get zeroed and record some velocities.

This was ammo I loaded in 2005, for my good old Model of 1917 "Enfield" rifle.

The new .30-06 sure felt good!

More "testing" to come. As if the .30-06 needs any more testing.

61 gr gave me the best accuracy and velocity from a 180 Hornady SP. This was in 2002, old lot rl22

Thanks. I see 62 grains listed as max, and don't have any doubt about being able to reach or exceed 2800 fps.

Really, the 180 at 2800 fps isn't a lot different than the 7mm mag load I used to shoot; a 175 at 2900 fps.

I could see this becoming my standard "mule deer & bigger" rifle. No problem. The .25-06 CDL will carry on as my "mule deer & smaller" rifle.

I can live with that.

Guy

Good luck Guy with your new 06. Fun to hear what a new gun will do. I acually was impressed with the same load you just tried. I was able to get several darn nice groups with 60 grains of RL-22 and the 180PT. I will definitly be taking a closer look at that powder soon as I can find some. Our gun shops on the wet side still have nothing. I would bet some RL-22 with 200 PT,s would be Mr nasty in that new rifle with that LONG barrel.

Nice, I want to see what those big 220's will do :) I really like those CDL's.

Guy,

Sounds like the makings of a great load. I think the CDL is going to be a shooter for you.

Nice, that sounds like a great load Guy. Can't wait to see what it does once you get it worked out. I am sure the 180's at 2800 will hammer anything in your country, and those CDL's are nice carrying rifles!

Don't be surprised if I cut way back on the number of hunting rifles I have.

Am thinking the .25-06 and the .30-06 have got it covered.

Keep a few others for the heck of it, relegate the .308 to target range duty and call it good with fewer rifles. Kind of like that idea, and this .30-06 just might let me do that.

Guy, are you trying to tell us you are going to cut back on rifles  ?

Man, those are bold words around these parts!

Guy,
61 grs of RL22 and 165 BTs turned my Interarms MK10 '06 into a real shooter.

No more IMR4350 for me.

Those CDLs are beautiful rifles.

Thinning the herd????
Blasphemy around here.........

HTDuck - thanks for the compliment, I've been hooked on the CDL since they were introduced by Remington. That slimmer stock really does it for me.

Well, not in any hurry to cut 'em back, but it's going to be real hard to justify any more hunting rifles with this good .30-06 in the safe!

The rifle herd will likely get thinned a bit someday, but not quite yet. Have some work for them to do still.

Back to the .30-06, I've got some more bullets I want to try, just to see how they do, and of course, I need to get out and shoot it at longer ranges too. 100 yards just isn't enough. I like the way Scotty has been using 200 yards so often lately.

Looking down the road at:
165's & H4530
180's & Ramshot Hunter, H4350, RE-22, maybe some H4831 (have a load that shoots great from the old '06)
200's & ???
220's & ???

Hope to settle on the 165's or 180's for general use, sighted in at 200 yards, and have loads avail for the heavies, just in case I get to go hunt giant Alaskan moose or something!

BTW - hadn't used that old Redfield 2-7x scope in a while. It's brighter than I remembered. One of the old ones.

Regards, Guy

I just sold a Redfield (Denver) Illuminator to one of the people on this forum. That scope held up extremely well to many of my more modern scopes over the years and it was better optics than some other name brands that I have owned.

I'm with Charlie. My old man loved those old Redfields and I ran a fixed 4x on my old 7mm Rem Mag for a long time. Great scope in their time.

180's & Ramshot Hunter,

Regards, Guy

I use 59.0 grains of Hunter (start low, blah blah) and 180 Partitions for 2 .30-06 rifles. Great accuracy and velocity. Meters like a dream. Hits like the last tequila you shouldn't have had.

Guy,

Sounds like you have a shooter/keeper in that 30-06.

Like you I like, and have, a 25-06 as my deer and smaller rifle and then something bigger for my deer and larger rifle. I'm thinking I need a 30-06 if for no other reason than to re-barrel as a 35 Whelen or a 338-06. I'm interested to see what load you work up for this rifle.

Vince

Guy, if you have any 4064 laying around try it with the 165's. I've had very good luck with accuracy and velocity using 48 grains.

Vince,

You don't need an 06 to rebarrel. You need an 06 and the 338 or 35 Whelen. It is always way better to have more options than less!!
