Gee, Jake, that almost sounds right. Except I thought it was, "Friends don't let friends shoot Remingtons." :?

Sounds like we need to get building as we both have 280's in a Rem!! Then we need to start with Scotty's Whelen!! Your on deck first!

Touché.

I don't know why it took me so long to get involved I keep running into like minded people. 61.5 gr8. RL22 180gr. Tsx.
Gave me 2750 and .5moa. At 300 yards. Hard to beat the old O6

There is a reason why the '06 is considered a classic; and it wasn't solely because it was a great cartridge in WWI and WWII and the Korean Conflict. The 30 calibre is hard to beat.

By way of introduction, this is my first post here, I have been surfing the site as a guest for some time... I to have a Rem. 700CDL in 30-06 and used the 180 AccuBond over 61.0 gr of Reloder 22 successfully for an Elk and Mule Deer hunt in Montana... Over the chronograh it averaged about 2,750 fps. and accuracy was a little less than 1MOA out to 300yds, the longest practice that I had access to. Performance in Montana was awesome. The elk was close, about 45 yds. one shot put it down. The Mule deer buck was 250 yds and the penetration was across the back 20 - 24" through ribs, spine and more ribs before lodging under the skin on a front shoulder. Retained weight was 126 grains, 70% picture perfect.

This rifle and load will be my primary rifle in the future.

Welcome aboard, Rol_P; there's always room for a rifle/handgun crank. The 30-06 will flat get the job done, no doubt. I can't say it is my favourite cartridge, but that is a personal preference and not a slur on a classic cartridge. If I were confined to one cartridge (forbid the thought), I could do far worse than to have a 30-06.

Well, I'd hate to leave out my opinion on the cartridge even though I have nothing to offer for reloads because you guys are well ahead of me in that arena.

However, I own six centerfire rifles (nothing compared to most in this forum, I know) but out of the six rifles (223 Rem, 223 WSSM, 264 Win Mag (new), 30-06, 300 SAUM, 338 Win Mag) the '06 (named "ol' reliable") is my go-to.

Can't tell you why but every time I reach in the safe to go off and hunt anything bigger than coyotes (223 WSSM for those) I grab Ol' Reliable.

Take care and welcome to the forum,

V/R

Rol_P: welcome to our little corner of the shooting world. We try to keep it constructive and friendly here and respect everyone's point of view. I also, among other calibers, shoot the .30-06 often and that particular rifle is one of my favorites for medium game. I shoot mostly the 165 Partitions for that rifle. You will find people from all over and with nearly any point of view.

Thanks for the welcomes fellas.. My Montana hunt was my first and will not be my last in the west. In preparation for the hunt I tried many combinations of powder, primers and cases trying to get the 180's to group well. Before I learned of the complexity of the challenge I thought, incorrectly, that I might be able to practice with Sierra 180 ProHunters to get some trigger time and easily switch to the more expensive Nosler Partition or AccuBond 180's for the hunt. Consequently I have a few boxes of Sierra 180 ProHunter bullets that I want to put together for "trigger time" as weather improves here in western NY and I can get to the range. Does anyone have a good load for Sierra 180's in the '06 that they would like to share?
Thanks in advance. Rol

Rol you can get Nosler PT blems at great prices from Shooters Pro Shop on line and they shoot just as good as what you buy over the counter.
The 30-06 has a good fan base here but it doesn't get talked up as much as some.
If you hang around long enough some one here will convince you that you need a 35 Whelen to go along with it.

Well, of course! Why would anyone want to be without?

Rol, I would have to say that you wouldn't go wrong using either the Sierra pro hunter or a nosler product. I've used both in my .300WSM and .338RUM. The 180 grain pro hunter out of my .300WSM has dropped Elk without a problem. The 225 grain pro hunter from my .338RUM drops Elk real fast. I also use both the 180 Partition and the 225 Partition with equally good results. As far as good loads with the 180 grain in the 06 I wouldn't hesitate to work with RL22 or IMR4350. You have to work with magazine length but tweaking OAL will also help if needed.

I am new here and must admit that reloading, shooting and hunting to me are like crack to a drug addict... I "Geared Up" to go to Montana and told my wife on the return, "now I have all this equipment I need to use it, I don't need to buy more" my mistake.. to say the last part... :( I do have a 1980's vintage Rem700 BDL in 270 Win. that could be rebarreled to a Whalen if I saw the need.. hunting something larger than elk. Maybe I should just think about a trade-in for a Whalen, but again I have no plans to hunt bigger or shoot further than the '06 is capable..

It is nice to be able to post on this forum rather than just surf as a guest. :)

The 270 sounds like a great donor or a rebore to 35 Whelen. I have a M70 that I'm planning on having JES do for me as soon as I get over the Christmas shock. Just some food for thought. Oh and don't ask anyone here what they think of the 35 Whelen you might be surprised.

Welcome aboard. Sounds like a great 30-06, load and elk hunt! Way to go!

A 30-06 and 35 Whelen would be a Skookum pair of rifles. Compare the 225 out of a Whelen to a 180 in a 30-06. It's just more of a great thing.

The .270 is a fine cartridge, and the older BDLs were excellent rifles. If you were so inclined, a 35 Whelen would be an excellent build on that action. As Scotty says, it is just more of a good thing when compared to your '06.
