I have a 30-06 Ruger M77 Hawkeye coming in the next month or so and with a Leupold VX-III 2.5-8x 36mm Duplex Reticle Matte. I am so impressed with the Hawkeye that I wanted one in 30-06 because I love the 30-06. I do have lots of load time experience with and 06.

I will use it for long shots on the gas line in Mississippi and with GB300win in Louisiana on the gas line where he hunts (if he and I take a deer first with our thumpers) next January.

I was told by my dealer that the Ruger M77 Hawkeye 30-06 I have ordered will come from the factory to the distributor in 10 days then it will be shipped to the dealer and that means about three weeks. Here is what I will be getting.

You mean that gas line where you killed that water dog that had antlers last year?

What happened to your Bee? Or is this a back up? Remember I got dibs on it....

You can't take em with you but a man can never have too many rifles.
Congratulations.

Nope, I can't take them with me and my grandson has already informed everybody in the family that all my rifles belong to him and that is my wish also. His grandmother will make sure of that.

Because of job situation I sold it because I needed funds and with the extra the Mark V brought I will be purchasing the Ruger. I really had a hard time doing it, I went back and forth a couple of times, even canceled the auction on GunBroker twice before I realized I needed to sell it. Killed two birds with one stone though, because I paid a very pressing bill that would have impacted my credit and at the same time had enough left to get a Ruger which Nancy did not have any trouble with.

I think my job situation will pick up in a couple of months but right now somethings had to be paid for and the sale was needed. I am just glad I could sell and then have some left over for a 30-06 because I just can't be without one.

It is not a bad thing though when I thought about it. Every time I went into the woods with that Mark V Custom I could hardly hunt because I did not want it all banged up and I found myself really babying the Mark V to such a point that I did not go into a thicket one day at Wolf River when the wind changed because I did not want it scratched up.

Your 30-06 Vanguard? ?That's the one I am referring to.

Nope!! It was a Mark V Custom 30-06 not a vanguard.

Bullet,

Sounds like you got the disease bad. There is no cure. You'd better plan on a couple of more Hawkeyes during this present year.

We shall see, but I am under no delusion, the Ruger Hawkeye is a hunting rifle period and if I get hunting accuracy that will be sufficient. I have had great shooters through out my life and the first was a Sako 308, the second a Ruger Mk II 30-06 and it shot as good as the Mark V Custom did.

It was also my main hunting rifle from 1979-1990. It is the rifle I did a lot of culling on deer, hogs and coyotes in Mississippi. It is also the rifle using my 165gr deer load at that time, that I took 52 coyotes in a year and a half, the closest was 125yds the farthest was 426yds and my average shot over 52 kills was 290yds. By the way, what is so neat is that the scope on that 06 was a Leupold 2.5-8x36mm like the one that will be on the new Hawkeye.

Like my articles "Some Times You Go Back" and "An Old Thing, A Good Thing, That Called Me Back" which were about that Ruger Mk II 30-06. Strange how some things work out the way they do. I am right back to where I began and that is not a bad place to be.

Since you no longer have your Weatherby `06, you`d better delete that one from the bottom of your posts????...

Give me time, I am not over it yet!!!!

Not over it yet? Yeah! I can see why.

Whether or not your job situation improves, the Rugers make for an excellent and more affordable substitute.

Later, I may add a 20" tubed Hawkeye in the 338 RCM with the wood stock/black matte barrel.

All right, I am over it, I changed my signature. 8)

Sorry to hear you're having to make those choices bullet, but glad you are keeping your spirits up.

Hey, it is only guns and not like I haven't had a lot of rifles to play with over the years. In a way I had to much in money, time and energy invested in the Mark V and just could not enjoy taking it in the woods for fear of messing up it's looks. I won't have that problem with the Ruger, I will just go hunting with it. Frankly, it is kind of a relief to tell you the truth.
