Hey all working up a load for a Rem. 7400auto with 180gr. Need some help. I started with IMR4350....the shells came out so hot you couldn't touch...i was told IMR4350 is too slow for 30-06.....I only use IMR....Does anyone have the correct IMR for 30-06auto and starting point?

I haven't found an auto-loader yet that didn't through hot brass. The brass doesn't stay in the chamber long enough for the steel of the rifle to help absorb much of the heat. Hot brass from an auto-loader is normal.

I for one do not believe that 4350 is to slow for your 7400. Go to Hodgdon's web site, find data for the 30-06 and IMR 4350, start at the "Start" loads and work your way up looking for accuracy and pressure along the way.

If 4350 bothers you try something slower like IMR 4007.

100% correct about the hot brass coming out of an autoloader. I shoot several autoloaders, 742, 7400 and Bar's and the reason the ejected brass is so hot is due to the fact that the autoloader uses the hot gas from the fired shell to operate the action. A semiauto 22 will eject the same hot brass as the bigger calibers.

For 180 grain and bullets above I would try some H4831sc. It burns clean which is good for the autoloaders gas ports and have proven to be very accurate. It also does not seem to develope real high pressures which autoloadres don't like anyway.

Back when I shot 30-06, my go to powder was IMR4350. I had a 742 ADL carbine that would shoot MOA at 100 yds. Just stay away from MAX loads and you will be fine.

In my auto 30-06 I have had good luck with Reloader 15 and IMR 4895/4064.

I also use RCBS small base dies.

Good point on the SB dies Alaska. I used the same when I loaded for my 742 carbine.

Still have my dad's 742 Carbine.........I favored the 760 Carbine in 06........still use here in alaska as my canoe gun for moose hunting!

The 4350 series ought to do just right for you. Reliability is indeed a big factor for the autos.

I agree you should consider sticking with I4350. I use it exclusively for the 30.06. I load 56 grains of 4350 with the partitions and I am very happy with the performance "on paper" out to 250 yards by 300 yards I am seeing about 10 inches of drop. I get better accuracy with 165 grain loads out of my particular gun out to 300 yards - a significant issue for us in Montana.

48 grains of IMR 4064 was my goto load using 180s, but that might be a little stiff fot your 7400.

Thanks everybody.......I ended up using a 168 Gr bullet with 56.0 Gr of RL19 holds the tightest group....Going to try it out in a couple of weeks:)
