My good friend recently aquired an old Springfield 840 rifle in excellent shape chambered for 30-30. He's been shooting flat nose bullets with it and I mentioned reloading a spitzer type to see what it would do. Does anyone have any loads cooked up for a 24" barrell? He's tired of shooting his 7 mag and is hoping this could be a good deer rifle out to 300 yards. Any info would be much appreciated. Thanks, tpepper

My buddy's daughter shot her first buck this year using a Savage bolt action in 30-30 with the 125 gr BT.
We were shooting it oout to 300 yds but there was a lot of drop.
I will try to get his load data and drop figures for you.

You can also check the various data for T/C Contenders in 30-30, as they are suitable for pointy bullets, too. I know there is quite a bit of data out there for these, although a good bolt gun may be able to handle somewhat higher pressure than the Contender and lever guns. Is the brass suitable for heavier loads, though?

you guy's are quick. I thank you for the replies. I was thinking along the lines of 2500 fps with a 125 grain bullet. Is the B.T. tough enough for deer? I've heard stories but never tried them myself, I'm more of a Partition man myself. I would think with this moderate velocity they should perform pretty good. What do ya'll think?

A load I got out of the lee manual I use in a 30-30 single shot handi rifle
29.8 grain reloder 7 and nosler 125 grain BT

2590 fps

I also have load with reloder 15 and 150 AccuBond that give 2400 fps.
I don't have the load data on hand but it was from either the lee
manual or from alliant powder online.

tpepper,

Here is the load data as promised.

30-30
125 gr BT
35.0 grs Varget
W-W case
CCI primer
MV is 2500 fps

This load killed a deer that was quartering away at 140 yds. The bullet hit the liver at the back of the rib cage, went through the lungs, destroyed the heart and exited the off shoulder.

Hope this helps.

Thanks again guys. I'm going to work on the load using Varget since I have plenty of that on hand. I'll post results in the future. Also, he's giving me an old Weaver k4 scope that's on it for the reloading I'm doing for him. He's buying a new scope for it. It's the post type reticle and I think it'd look good on my old Swiss. Are these old scopes any good? Thanks, tpepper

The Weaver K4 was a classic. However, there are much better scopes out there now. I'm a Leupold guy so I would tell you to go with a M8 4x, which is much brighter than the older Weaver. You can't shoot what you can't see.

Over the last 15 years, I have used my 30-30 T/C 14" with the 130 gr Hornady single shot pistol bullet. I have killed deer and antelope with it out to 250 yards. I am using 29.5 grains of reloader #7 the chronograph has it at 2300 fps. Yes it drops a lot at 250 yards - about 10 inches being zeroed at 150 yards. IMR 3031 is another good powder to use in the 30-30. You might try the 150 grain AccuBond - I'm going to after I use up the remaining 100 or so of my already loaded 130's.

Just my 2 cents, I'll be interested to hear about your results with it.
