Using the LeverRevolution powder, what is your pet load and bullet in a lever action.

I am restoring a 30-30 my wife's grandmother used and hope to shoot it some day.

Thanks

WM

Surely do like my .30-30, but have never used LeverRevolution powder. Sorry 'bout that.

Typically the 170 gr bullets from Remington do a fine job. At .30-30 velocity, I've never felt the need for some kind of premium type bullet. Lever action rifles carry well, and are quite capable in the game fields. Been a while since I took any game with mine, but I try to hunt a day or two with one every year. I just enjoy so doing.

Regards, Guy

Never tried that powder in mine. I use Varget, since that's what I use for another rifle. I have tried the 160 grn FlexTip. I did load/trim to the correct length, and still had a bit of trouble feeding. The good old 170 grn Sierra works just fine.

The 30-30 doesn't need to be a science experiment. It's just one of those types of rifles.

I've had good results from a couple of boxes of factory 160gr FlexTips a friend sent me. I'm now down to four of them, and will be switching back to my old stand-by 150gr Speer Hot-Cor handloads again. I use Win748 in mine, but I've also had good results with BL-C(2) and Accurate 2520.

The perticuler blend of LVR sold to the public is the blend they use in the 30-30 LVR ammo. Use a good 170gr bullet like the REM CLRN and you will have the best of the best.
I can speak more to its use in the 35REM where the longer bullets perform better like the 200gr flextip and the 220gr Speer.

Then 160gr 30 cal flextip is a long being surface bullet and I beat it and the 170gr bullets will out perform the 150,s using LVR powder.

H4895 and the 150gr Speer is another listed load thats fast.

I can't remember the exact charge but 36.5 sticks in my head with WW brass and 170 Speers and Sierra. Very accurate in my M94 plus it runs just about 2300FPS.

I've seen alot of reports of good accuracy w/the 160 gummy tip and 35.0 of leverpowder.
My marlin absolutely loves the nosler 3030 ballistic tip round nose on top of 34.0 h4895 at 2320fps.
This is a neat bullet w/a thin jacket on top but gets very stout at mid section...its longer than a 170 cupncore.
Its ez to shoot 1" 5 shot groups and even under on a good day.

A few years ago I tested three of the most commonly avail factory .30-30 loads/bullets and posted that over in the product review section of Marlin Owners. Here's a link to the test:

I was very impressed with how similar the results were from these three different 170 grain loads from different makers. Came away convinced that the manufacturers have long-since figured out how to build quality, inexpensive .30-30 ammo that just plain works.

One thing that surprised me was the depth of penetration by those slowish moving 170's. They penetrated deeper in the milk jugs than have some .375 H&H loads!

Within it's performance envelope, I have a huge respect for the good old .30-30 Win cartridge and the bullets developed for it. Have to admit that I've yet to try some of the newer bullets such as the Nosler Ballistic Tip and Hornady's various flex-tip options.

Normally when I handoad it, I stick to BLC2, or Varget, and push the 170's to about 2100 fps. Easy shooting, reliable and accurate.

A relative of mine used his old Win 94 to fill the freezer with fresh elk every winter. Kind of surprised me, but he was able to take them at modest range, and targeted elk he could make a clean shot on. Still, a freezer full of elk meat every winter via the .30-30 is another one of those things that made me go "hmmm" and started me thinking that the cartridge just might be more than a 100 yard deer rifle. Enjoy that little cartridge that can do so much!

Thanks all. All we have is about 8 150 grain core-lokt rounds. So I am actually excited about trying some heavier bullets and getting this rifle back to its former glory.

One more project to kill some time this winter

I been using 35 to 36 grains of lever powder with the 160 FTX . For years I,ve used lots of H-4895 or IMR-4064 with any 170 grain bullet. However I,m likely to use the lever powder for everything in the future. The fairly new lever powder is fantastic stuff.

This load was sweet. 35 g and the recoil was a lot less than I anticipated. I got a group of about 1 3/4" at 100 yards with the iron sites. Worked great! Thanks for that.

Next on the docket, some 170g lead and some Varget down the tube

More to come
