Because most 30/30s have tube magazines, most 30/30 ammo (and reloading info) deals with round or flat nose bullets.

I have a Savage over and under in 30/30 over 20 ga. I have often thought of loading a better flying bullet like say a 125 of 150 gr. BT bullet. Actually a fellow with a leveraction with a tube mag. could load one in the barrel and ONE only in the mag and use sharp pointed bullets in his 30/30 two shot repeater.

Anyone load any spitzer bullets for 30/30?

Robin, This is not a new idea, and yes it will and does work very well. The idea is to get a bullet which will expand reliably at the slightly reduced velocities of the .30-30. I went a slightly different route and loaded those 125 and 150 BT' s ina 7.62 x 39 which proved to be awesome on deer and Mtn Lion. This was built on a little Sako action. You might even find a little better accuracy, but for the most part at practical ranges this discussion is mostly in the mind of the shooter! Enjoy and good shooting.

308sako,

I also shoot the 7.62x39 in several decent bolt action rifles and really
like it. I am just about to load up some 125 Gr BT's for coyotes.
What powder did you use and did you like the results?

Oldelkhunter, Sorry for the delay, but been away from the computer. The powder that does best for me in 2 7.62's is the AA1680. I've found great velocity and accuracy with numerous bullets. But for heavier than average bullets, the VV130 is also a winner.

My best load yet for NEF single shot
is 125 g Nosler Balistic tips and 1/2 grain below Max
of Alliant Reloder 7
2595 fps ave velocity
2" groups at 109 yard open sights (which is as good as the shooter
can do with open sights)

Duffy,
I load a 120 gr BT in my 7X30 Waters Contender. I have not taken a deer with it yet, but I know it will perform flawlessly when the time comes.
I am a beleiver in the BT. I use it in my 280 Rem and have taked several WT Deer and 2 Caribou. Only had 1 deer run off, 6 pt was heart shot and went about 50 feet. Both Caribou bulls were shot at 250 yds with complete penetration. Each ran about 30 yds.
As for the 30-30, you can use either the 125 gr or 150 gr BT's. If you were to use either BT in a lever gun, your 2 shot repeater will become a 1 shot killer. Follow up shots will not be required.
