I am looking to step up from the 264 win mag to a 30-378 Weatherby Magnum for long range big game hunting, can anyone offer advice pros, cons???

Welcome to the forum.

The 30-378 is in fact a grand cartridge. I have had 4 or 5 of them.
It is capable of launching 200 gr bullets at 3200 fps + and 180 gr at close to 3500 fps so no slouch there.

Unless you go custom I do suggest the Accumark for accuracy.

Suggestions? Get a ton of Retumbo.

The gun is a Accumark, and has less then 100 shots through it and is also comes with a Burris 4 by 16 by 50 black diamond with balistic plex scope all for 2050.00 I do my own reloading and so does the guy that has it for sale, however he is using Barnes 180 grain TTSX and I am a die hard Nossler Partition and AccuBond user, so if i do decide to buy this gun, I will be trying both of them in the 180 grain to start. Do you have any suggestions other then the 180's?

The 30-378 begs for heavier bullets. A 200 grain Partition or AccuBond launched at 3200 fps is capable of handling any game in North America with aplomb. With that much powder behind the bullet, heavy is the way to go.

Agree - I'd go with the 200 gr AccuBond in a heartbeat. It was very accurate from my .300 Rem Ultra Mag. Can't help but think it would work equally well from the .30-378... What a cartridge!

Yah, drop the 180s right now, dont even bother with em, and go straight to the 200g AB. All that needs to be said...Would kill elk and deer out to 1200 yards easy...

I agree with the others, go with the 200 gr AB. A true long range hammer at 3200+ fps.

Important for reloading!!!!!!! Even though Norma makes Weatherby brass as well as Norma brass for the 30-378 there is a difference  I developed my loads with Norma brass and loaded up to a safe but hot load. It shoots soooo accurate and fast. I then bought some Wby brass on sale and loaded up a bunch. The first shot locked up my bolt. I got the bolt open with the help of a hammer handle. I pulled the bullets from 3 rounds and the load was exactly correct. I fired one more round. Stupid is as stupid does. After having my gunsmith check the rifle over I pulled the remaining bullets. I tried some of my norma loads again. It shot sooooo accurate and fast. :) There is a difference in brass and with the pressures you'll be experiencing it's good to work up each load that changes any component or parameter. I sold the Wby brass and bought some more Norma. No problems.
Other than that I liked the 180 Accubonds and did I mention it shot sooooo accurate. The muzzle brake ain't for looks either. I left the brake on for hunting after shooting it once without it. It humbles my 375 RUM in the recoil department but is very pleasant with the brake.

A change in any component mandates reducing the charge by at least five percent and working up the load again to verify it is safe.

Man, I have always wanted a big 30 or 33 on that WBY case, but it has eluded me. I do think the 300 Mags, even the 300 Win, does its best with 200's. Might as well use all that extra powder to push those big bullets HARD! Good luck, post some pictures. Accumarks sure are some sharp rifles! Scotty
