Have a friend that paid a guy load him up some 180 gr CT BT. When he shot the first 4 times he could hardly get the bolt open. He brought a loaded round and the 4 empties along with the recipe to work to show me. The cases looked OK, but the primers were flattened bad. The powder was Winchester WMR. I think it was about 89 grains. I have looked high and low for data supporting this load and can't find anything. My recomendation to him was to pull the whole lot and start over with a known recipe. Any help would be appreciated.

Someone with mid 1990s load data may be able to provide/verify that load as Win discontinued WMR a few years after releasing it. My suggestion would be to get some Retumbo and give it a try. Just about every 300RUM I've heard about likes Retumbo, mine does. RL-25 has been good as well.

The Hornady 7th Edition Manual lists a maximum of 87.5 grains of WMR for the 178-180 grain bullets. My updated version of QuickLOAD no longer lists WMR, so I can't run that through for you. I would suggest that 89 grains may be tickling the dragon's tail; it is certainly near (if not actually) a maximum charge. Is it possible that he neglected to trim his neck and as result is compressing the brass against the throat?

Hey now, dont forget H1000...

H1000 or Retumbo, only 2 Id try if I was doing another due to both being an extreme series powder.

RL25 is way pickier from lot to lot and with temp changes.

Another vote for Retumbo. Start there, second pick would be H1000.

I've tried the Retumbo with both 180's & 200's without much luck. Didn't give H-1000 much of a try and moved on to RL-25.
I should have settled with it as the results were well within hunting perameters for me.
Currently using IMR-7828 w/ 180's for great results.....

Let us know how it turns out. ( FWIW - Max charge of Retumbo with the 180's gives me a stick bolt )

Checked my notes. With the 200 grain start at 89 and should top out at 94-95 pending on rifle. Here is my AWR Rem 700 200 rum with 210 vld and 94 gr retumbo.

Pop, are you REALLY happy with that 300RUM? Seems like it could do better! Ha.. Just kidding. That seems like a serious shooter! Scotty

Fotis,

That is an enviable group from your RUM. That sort of accuracy seems somewhat common with the cartridge, however.

Enviable! Yeah, I would say so!! That is varmint grade accuracy from a big boomer! Scotty

IMR 7828 is a good powder for the 300 RUM, have had good results with the 180 Partition, but I agree with everyone else with Retumbo and RL 25 which produce the best results for me.

When I get back from Texas I will try the 200 gr Accubonds.

That is a good looking pure hunting rifle. I like wood and blued metal, but the synthetic and stainless is just awesome for all around bashing around in the woods and rocks! Scotty

Thanks guys for all the info. I think he will pull everything and start over. Lots of different things for him to try. thanks again for all the help.

On any load, it is the wise course to work up the load in the rifle that will use the ammunition. Since it seems as if your friend does not roll his own, he would be well advised to have the loads worked up and demand the targets and chronograph data at a minimum. Picking a load the shooting it, especially when it is not pressure tested, is a recipe for disaster.

Fotis,

Your M700 AWR 300 RUM is a keeper. 8)
