Made the decison to go with Nosler instead of Swift. I've loaded H Interbonds 165's with good results but wanted to move up in wieght and slow down a bit for the small deer around here and also double as an elk load (if I ever get out of here and head west!)

The Nosler manual I have doesn't even have 300 RUM in it! So I am searching for a good load using the 180 grain AB or PT for the 300 RUM with Retumbo powder. I also have H414, IMR 4350 and H4831sc. Gun is a Remington 700 SPS. Info on COL or other measurements would be graet. Any comments on how they perform at the range or with deer/elk would be appreciated.

Also what would be your opinion on the best all around for small to med size deer and elk? AB or PT's?

Thanks k-man

Thanks POP. I reviewed previous posts but didn't see anything specifically for 180 AB using retumbo for the 300 RUM much less in a remington 700. Is there info I could receive from Hogden? K-man

According to Hodgdon:

180 GR. SPR SPBT(Maximum Loads)
DIA. .308" COL: 3.530"
US 869 107.0 3070 57,300 PSI
H50BMG 108.0C 3159 62,100 PSI
H870 106.0 3206 58,200 PSI
RETUMBO 100.5C 3300 62,400 PSI
H1000 96.0 3218 62,800 PSI
H4831 89.0 3167 62,500 PSI

Start at 95 gr or so and work up. Should max out at 3300 fps or so at 98-100 gr.

Thanks again POP. I am new to reloading so needing exact data is required until I am comfortable with all the terms. I went to Hogdon's site also. So SPR SPBT can be applied to the AB and Partitions? K-man

It will be very hard to loacate data that matches your particular prerequisites to the "T".

Some are developed using different rifles, primers, bullets, brass etc.

Hells bells some will even have different lot #'s and some data was not developed using sporting rifles but actual 50 lbs pressure guns.
I understand that you're new to this so this is why I am pointing this stuff out. Given the aforementioned Retumbo data what I would do is take the max,(100 gr or so) minus 10% (90) gr and you can start there with any given different component differences from the listed. Please ask any and all questions that you might have. There is a plethora of knowledge on this board coming from pros and hobbyists and they are always willing to share.

Pop is right, there is a lot of load data available here.
Good powders for the 300 RUM include Retumbo, H1000, RL22, and RL25.
Stick with the Federal Gold MAtch primers, GM215M and load your COL to the rifles magazine length. Most Remingtons are 3.670-3.680".

Beat me to it.....COL is generally the magazine over-all length for that round.
Mine is a 700 Sendero, and I can not get the H1000 to work. ( actually ok with that, that stuff has some recoil to it )
Right now my best combo is with the Viht powder N-165 & 180gr AB's
Also as previously mentioned stay with the Federal primers. POP & JD know what their talking about with this round.

I"ve always used H-1000 with 200g AB's, 210g VLD's, or REtumbo with the same bullets. Velocity is anywhere from 3000fps with the 210's and 3225fps with the 200g AB and Retumbo. Groups are half MOA out to 800 yards. Rifle is a factory LSS 300 RUM. I always used the regular Fed 215 mag, but the match will definately work to. My hunting loads (AB's) were loaded to 3.660" to still function in the magazine, my target loads (VLDs) were always seated to touch the lands, usually 3.8". With 180g bullets, I had good luck at 97g h1000, 180g btips. Velocity was 3350fps and once again half moa. I always felt that the 200g AB was the optimal hunting bullet for this round, and thats what I shot. The heavier target bullets make this cartridge even better to shoot at longer ranges which I have out to 1150 yards. I never did try RL-25. Good luck!
