300 Savage Loads

JD338 check you PM's I got you covered NIB rifle or factory new 300savage barrel for a 700rem.

Nice, you don't find those very often.

40 grains of 4064 and a Speer or Sierra 150 grain Flat Base bullet has been my go to load. It shoots right around 1.5" at 100 yards through the old M7b-4x I have on top. Thanks again Kurt! :)

Remington 150gr factory coreloc run right at 2650fps. A pleasant 150gr load is 40gr varget with the hornady #3031 at 2600fps

Thanks for those loads. I have a bunch of 150 PTs and ABs along with a decent amount of 150 Hornady SSTs. Should be able to give them a whirl pretty quick.

Just scrubbed the barrel and cleaned it up pretty well.

Here are a couple pictures of the old girl. It is cleaned up now and ready for a range session. I have a few old 150 grain Silvertips I am going to run through it, just to see how it shoots. Should be pretty fun, it's been about 20+ years since I have fired it.

Thanks to Joel, he was able to acquire me some brass, dies and bullets for it, so I will do a little loading thru the Summer. It would mean a ton to score on a buck with it this Fall. Hasn't been hunted in a long time.

Good looking rifle, Scotty. It is assuredly a classic chambered in a classic cartridge.

You aren't really going to shoot A-frames in the .300 Savage, are you Scotty?

HA! I knew someone would call me on that Charlie! Joel grabbed them, as they are the new FN version's made for tube fed lever rifles. He made me promise I would put one in the jugs with the Savage.

The first loads will likely be something like Hornady or Nosler 150's. I don't imagine I will be running the Swifts for deer hunting.

I figure it always fun to experiment with different bullets and I'd like to see what they do as well. Never know what that old rifle will run up against. Hoping to take it back to the Adirondacks this Fall for some Northern deer hunting, on foot, the old way!

Yeah, I'd think the A-Frame to be a bit tough for the old girl; but dead is dead. It will be fun to see what they do in the jugs, however.

Probably so Mike. I know Swift made them for 30-30, 308 ME, and the 307, so I am thinking with the ability to scoot them along decent in the 300 Savage, it might expand decent as well. Plus that FP has to put some initial whompum on the intended quarry!

I've shot a lot of 150 gr Speer Mag Tips through my 99. I run them over 4064, have also used W748 and 4320 with fine results. Don't have any of my data available here on the road, but I was using slightly under max loads per Lyman Data. I seat mine to cannelure.

Mine is a very early .300 savage and doesn't like to feed really pointy bullets with soft tips. The mag tip, Rem Core Lokt and various 30-30 style bullets feed much slicker than conventional spitzers or poly tips. The 150 mag tip is a truly awesome whitetail bullet at 300 sav velocities. Expands nicely without poofing too much meat. One issue with the round in a 99 is that you will have to seat most boat tail bullets quite deeply to accomodate the magazine length. The 99 is best served with flat based protected point spitzers of 150-165 gr. If you can't find the mag tip, I should think the deep curl or Lapua Mega 150 gr would be ideal.

Educate me Doc...These ones are made to shoot at 30-30 velocities, and with the way an A-frame holds together, I can't imagine this bullet not being a great whitetail bullet. I want to see if these will stand up to a jug test like most A-frames do. Granted they are on the spendy side for WT, but this could make a great black bear or even respectable elk round for close-in work.

Joel,

I do believe I spoke out of turn. I wasn't thinking of the thinner skin on those produced for the 30-30. I would tend to agree that they are spendy (but when did that ever deter a gun crank?). I also concur that they should perform very well on black bear.

Yeah, the A-frames are about $1.25/bullet, but it isn't much more than what Cabela's gets for a Partition now. I like partitions, but the A-frames are a whole other level of hunting bullet IMO. Hope that doesn't offend anyone here.

I like Swift bullets and I've shot a lot of them over the years. I don't know that they are "better" than Nosler, but they do penetrate quite well. I suspect that my bias arises in no small measure because they are manufactured in Kansas, my natal State. I find as I have passed the "60" mark that I take a new measure of pride in my roots and the products generated within the state.

As soon as I have a good day, I will get some loaded up and put some into the jugs. Should be fun. Looking forward to working with the old lever gun.
