300 Win Mag - 270WSM - 7mm Rem Mag

Well, I have the R22 and will try them out once I try these next loads of H870. I don't know what the deal was, but this same rifle used to shoot the old style 160gr X bullet really well with 79gr of H870. I tried H870 with the HDY 175gr SPT and they shot around 2" at best.

I now have some Speer 160 Mag Tips loaded with H870 and I will see how those do. I have 200, 160gr Accubonds on order, so if the Speers don't work out well, I will try the Accubonds and R22. I am thinking something has to come together. I am not looking for benchrest accuracy either. Just something that groups consistently under 1.5 inches. If I can get it to do that everytime, it will kill anything I point it at. Scotty

Well, I ditched the 165gr Interbonds in the 300 Win Mag, and loaded up some 200gr Sierra SBT's, I used R22, CCI 250's and WW cases. I loaded 72, 73, and 74grs. All three of them shot really well, and two, three shot groups of the 74's grainers were nice little 7/8" triangles. I am very happy with that load. I think my rifle kind of prefers the heavier bullet weights. I know I do, they actually seem to recoil less than the 165's did, and their groups are really consistent. I am going to load 20 up and then retry them. There are no pressure signs and brass looks pretty good.

The 270WSM really like the 130gr Interbonds though. I shot all at 200 yards with that rifle today and it really made me look good. I was shooting into an inch or a touch more, 3" high out of the bull. I was shocked. I am using 72gr's of Magpro, CCI250, and WW cases, seated 2.875. I am thinking this might go with me on the Spring trip, it is just such an easy and accurate rifle to shoot. Right now, I am trying to decided between the 300 Win Mag, 7mm Rem, and the 270WSM. All three of them did well. Either way, thanks for all the help. Scotty

You know - with those three - there is a huge amount of overlap. Aside from the great bears, there isn't anything that I'd hunt with one, that I wouldn't hunt with the other. Elk, mule deer, whatever... I'd grab any of those and just go for it. Very similar in that respect.

Just an observation. In the field, I don't think it would matter two hoots which cartridge you used.

FWIW, Guy

Guy, you are totally right. I am going to take my 300 Win Mag. It has been a few years since it has been in Idaho, and I haven't ever shot a bear with it, so I figure it is time for it. Plus, I really liked how those 200gr Sierras shot. I would have preferred the 200gr Accubonds, but I couldn't get ahold of any seconds, and I saw them on sale, so I grabbed them. They have a great SD and BC, so they will work well for out there, and back here for deer and bear in the Fall. I do have alot of overlap, but all of them are different to me! The 300 Win Mag was the rifle I first purchased after getting stationed in Camp Pendleton. I figured it would be a great Western gun, and it has. It is a little heavy with the Laminated stock, but it points well, and hammers pretty much everything I point it at. Scotty

Laughing here. I enjoyed my years at Camp Pendleton too. Semper Fi!

Yeah - the .300 Win mag is one of those rifles that a guy could hunt with forever, all around the world. What a great cartridge! Years ago I was having trouble getting some 165's to group and picked up some 200 gr Sierras - maybe at the exchange on base - they used to have a pretty good sporting goods section. Those 200's changed the way I looked at the .300 mag and magnums in general. After seeing how they grouped, I was sold on long, heavy bullets for the .300 & 7mm mags. Great accuracy and they shoot right on through big game, leaving destruction in their wake.

Have a box of 200 gr partitions on my loading bench now - waiting for some empty .30-06 cases....

Guy, Semper Fi, back at ya!

I bought the 300 Mag, when you couldn't get in too much trouble storing it in a wall locker in the barracks. I shot some nice muleys up in Case Springs with the rifle and then used it in ID quite a bit. It is a solid rifle and has never let me down.

The sporting goods section is pretty slim from what you remember, but I did buy the rifle from them. I figure if I have the case capacity, I might as well use it, that big long bullet seems like it will get stuff done, and get throught what it needs to.

It is good to see other Marines around here, I thought me and 257Ackley were the only ones. Scotty
