Anybody have any experience with the Weatherby 307 series of rifles? Specifically the Alpine CT.

I've been eyeing a Browning Xbolt 2 in 280AI as a Christmas gift to myself and stumbled on the Alpine CT also coming in 280AI. Any input folks have with the 307 line of rifles and particularly the Alpine CT would be greatly appreciated.

I’m not a carbon barrel guy, but the ST version would be okay to have in my safe. I think Weatherby is making good guns.

I have a friend who has the Weatherby 307 in a 308win. He loves everything about the rifle but he's finding out that the mag box is the limiting factor and he can't even chase the lands and as a result he's leaving some accuracy on the table.

Id assume that the same rifle in 280AckImp would be the same.

If your thinking you really want a Weatherby then look into the Mark V Hunter. I've got one and it has a floor plate and does not suffer from mag box issues on any bullet I've tried.

The Alpine CT and ST have floor plate so i wonder if it would be the same as your Mark V. The ones with the plastic Magpul mags that stick way out don't do it for me so they are off the table.

Without getting into a discussion on lands vs accuracy, did he consider removing the divider at the rear of the magazine to make it longer?
If a short action 307 is like all of the rest of Weatherby's rifles, there is a divider towards the back that is removable and sets the length.

Having said that, the bolt stop location might need to be changed as well depending on how far back the bolt currently travels.

My fault. I thought all of the Weatherby 307s came with the AICS style mags. After reading your post, it's entirely possible that the 307 your looking at would have s longer mag box length. Id be willing to bet that if you called Weatherby someone could answer that question and possibly even measure the interior mag well / box to give you a max length. It wouldn't tell you about your specific bullets you wanted to load but it might give you an idea.

You know I don't think he tried that, and honestly I hadn't thought to mention to him to look at the magazine / bolt stop. I will mention that to him.
