OK, I have a Remington 30.06 action and I want to make a .308 rifle. If I take the 30.06 action (I believe it is a standard action but it may be a long action) and have a .308 barrel put on it, will I need any other modifications or is this acceptable? I know the bolt faces are the same but I am worried about the action length. I am not sure how the shorter cartridge will act. However, I have found that the army uses a long action for their .308. Comments? :?

I am planning on using my remington 3006 as a doner for a future 260 remington, and I beleive there is not a problem. You will be allowed ot have the rifling set out farther allowing you to shoot the heaviest bullets and still not loose case capacity.

308 Win in a 30-06 action won't be an issue for you.

Why are you going 308 Win? With a blueprinted action and a good barrel, the 30-06 will be a tack driver with more velocity than the 308 Win.
Just curious...

+1 to what JD said.

The real advantage of a .308 is the short action to create a smaller, lighter rifle.

Just wondering.

Well, its not the action that I was to build this rifle around. I have a beautiful piece of Turkish walnut that I sent out to have cut for a small action .308. Instead of cutting for a short action he cut it for a long action, thus my problem. I already own a great 30.06. But now I have to buid a rifle around this stock and not an action. :? Clear as mud?
 Oh, I don't know, I may just go ahead and build another 30.06. Just checking my options.

I have four 30/06s so shouldn't try to talk you out of it but there are other options; 25/06, 6.5/06, 270, 280, 280AI, 338/06, 35Whelen just to name a few common ones. Open the bolt face and you could get into the Mags.Rick.

Understand the problem. I have to agree with Rick Smith, you have several options available based on the 30-06 case. Sounds like an excellent opportunity to look at the 280 AI.

I knew JD would bring up the .280AI, but I'd have to agree with him.

My second choice, just to be different would be a .240 Weatherby.
