338 RUM

Maybe November these moose will voted out of city limits
That’s a old bull !
I was sitting waiting on my wife in Anchorage at Wal Mart and a big bull walked by the pick up !
Naturally I was seeing steaks !
I have a cousin living in Wasilla that runs into this problem every season. He lives at the edge of town and has moose for constant companions.

My area closed the 15th in 20B
I waited till the last week hoping it turn cold well it didn’t turned warmer. Great for camping but not for moose hunting. Plenty of bulls in area would respond but would not come in to my calls too early.
In Early Sep took my old Grumman 19’ canoe up the Chena River hoping I would run into one.
Well the moose gods did not bless me this year yet. It’s open until the 25th in my front yard with Bow. Maybe a bull will come and eat my yard grass if I can pull the old bow back ! Probably would have better luck with a hammer!
I loved hunting the Chena with my dad when we were stationed at Ft. wainwright, Late 50’s into the mid 60s. Lots of moose then.

I bet so !
Fairbanks people population was very low before the pipeline days boom time. Our population has decreased since then but will probably never be the levels of the late 60’s. I don’t know what people are going to do here with heating oil at $4.50 a gal delivered……those who are able and can a lot more wood splitting for wood stoves…….sorry They tried to push natural gas spent millions installing the gas pipeline thru Fairbanks but stopped short of completion because of contractor went into peoples property to install the line and like my community in North Pole everyone refused Nat gas because the old oil furnaces would have to replaced. We are getting the west coast politicians into our state and bringing their environmental and socialist agenda with them. Currently they are trying to decide how to spend the Biden money in the Borough. What people should ask what did our local government agree upon with the federal government to get that free money ……nothing is for free ! My Property Tax assessor lives in GA and works part time and remote for the Borough go figure !

They kick like a mule, I usually get a love tap from the scope every time I shoot it with the 250AB. Ammo is all but non-existent for them, so you'll need to load your own. I have the XCR version, but with a Stocky's Stocks thumbhole laminate on it. Brass is difficult to find right now. I'm currently looking to put a muzzle brake on it, probably go with one from Muzzle Brakes and More (I think he's on here as IdahoCTD). So far mine likes the 200ET, 225AB and 250AB.
Muzzle Brake on XCR2
I went with the Mag Na Port the 4 port job
Not bad on the ears and keeps the barrel down during recoil I like it better than a Brake .
No need for a bullet heavier than 225gr in 338 RUM……..I use the Swift A Frame 225gr and 91.0 of RL 22. Recoil is much less than 250’s. The bonded Swift is Thor Thunder Stick in the 338 RUM.

I went to Cabela's last night and found a used 700LH LSS in 338 RUM that was a great price. Didn't have enough time to buy it, but I'm sure thinking about it.
I don't really need a 338 RUM, but the gun fit perfect and it comes with a nice Leupold up top. I might just buy it and rebarrel it to 264 win mag and keep everything else the same.

Before any of that, though, does anyone have 338 RUM stories/experiences they'd like to share?
Leupold 3.5x10
CDC Reticle
Works great
Reloader 22 @ 91.0
225gr Swift A frame
CCI 250
RP cases
Suggest stay with 225gr weight bullets recoil is excessive with 250 or heavier. The 225gr Nosler Part or Barnes TTSX is also excellent. Very flat shooting and good bullet retention on heavy large game like elk and moose/Bear. My Rem 700 in 338 RUM has a space of honor standing beside my 300 Win Mag and 338 Win Mag……and 30-06. Recoil is substantial with 250gr or heavier. I like 225gr weight and I had my rifle Mag Na Ported which I like better than a Muzzle Brake.
