I absolutely love my 338 Win for Elk and am starting to use it for smaller game as well. In developing a load for large bodied mule deer or whitetail, would the 180 gr or 200 gr Ballistic Tip be more suitable. Is the 200 gr built with heavier wall thickness for slower expansion or are they of similar construction.

Either is quite suitable, the higher velocity of the 180 will create more trauma.[/i]

I use the 180's for deer in all of my 338's (330 Dakota, 338 WM, 338 Lapua, and 338x284). I normally shoot deer behind the shoulder, which will cause bruising to rib meat, which I don't save anyway.

Just what I do, go for what you're comfortable with.
