The 35 Whelen with 225 Accubonds put the hammer down on a Doe yesterday. The shot was from a tree stand up about 16-17 ft. Doe was 60yds. had to hurry the shot somewhat, hit her in the front of the shoulder area entering the front part of the rib cage near the base of the neck. The results were incredible, compared to my 30-06 using 150 Accubonds. I mean this deer hit the deck so fast I had to look twice to believe it. 8)

For sure as other members of this blog have stated, there was no blood trail. :)

Congrats~! The 35's are hammers. JD338 has had similar experiences with his Whelen

DON,

Congratulations on your doe and welocme to the 35 Whelen Hammer Time Club!
I know exactly what you are talking about. The 35 Whelen hits hard, there is no replacement for displacement!

DON,

My 35 Whelen is still unblooded. However, that should change this spring. I can tell you that the 358, the 356 and the 350 Remington Magnum hit hard and put game down with authority. I have no doubt that the Whelen will work just as effectively, if not more so. Congratulations. Were you able to get any pictures/

Don, very awesome! How was the meat damage from the 225gr AB? Welcome to Whelen Country! Your experience is just about like everything I have shot with mine, deer thru elk almost all fell on their faces at the shot.... The ones that didn't, well, they didn't go far at all either. Scotty

Had to relay the experience to my Dad as he passed the gun on to me. He just laughed as he knew of its tremendous ability to hammer deer from past experiences. I took some pics, will post them soon. Yeah I sure have enough gun now. :) Exit hole was size of a quarter after passing thru a few rib bones and some base neck area. I didn't take pics of the internal damage, but from all appearances the internal holes looked about 50-cent in size. I agree with an earlier post the 225 AB is a stout bullet vs some softer 200 grain offerings, including the Rem. factory load my dad used to take several deer. But I am totally satisfied with this load. I believe this load goes 2677 fps if I remember correctly, coupled with all that energy it's awesome.

Dad always said nothing compares to a 35 Caliber Gun. As a the newest member of the Whelen Country Hammer Time Club all I can say is WOW, and Dad was right. Thank-You Nosler for making an great bullet.

Don

Thats sounds like a great load! 2600+ out of the AB. I can't imagine much you would need more. That sounds like very typical 35 Cal performance. The good thing about the Whelen is it doesn't require super premium bullets to work well, but man, when you use them, you really step up the HP a notch or two. Looking forward to seeing the pictures. Scotty

One thing I think is a laughing mater is there is no blood trail !!!!!!

You have just convinced me to take the Whelen hunting tomorrow! It has been sitting in the safe for too long this year! Scotty

Scotty,
At this point my 06 may not come out of the gun safe for awhile. Um, maybe a re-barrel job to another 35 Whelen could be in store, Ya never know!!

Don

DON,

If you are going to rebarrel, consider the 280 AI.
Armed with a 35 Whelen and 280 AI, you have a 2 gun battery that will cover everything in NA.

As I recall, I shot 17 bucks with my 35 Whelen. I had to blood trail 2-3, they were pretty short and very heavy.

Yeah, don't ya just love ? No blood trail. That's what Dad always said. He was amazed at the difference between his 8mm vs the 35 Whelen comparing the killing power. He always said I see legs in the air when I shoot ! :)

Don

Sorry everyone the exit hole pic was not a little better, but you can get somewhat of an idea anyway.

Nice doe, congratulations again.
The 35 Whelen enters with a big hole and exits with a bigger hole.

I started hunting with my 35 Whelen in 1988, the first year for the M700 Classic 35 Whelen and the Remington factory loadings. I used the 200 gr PSPCL load and shot my first buck, a big 11 pt in the base of the neck as he quartered away dropping him in his tracks. The bullet hit a poplar about 15" in front of him, entered the neck breaking the spine but never exited. The next day I shot a spike horn head on. The bullet entered the neck, hit the spine and deflected downward through the shoulder where it was found under the hide. I killed 2 more bucks the following season, both were lung shots and the bullets exited. In 1990, Nosler introduced the 225 gr PT and I used that bullet to take many more bucks as well as a 250 lb Black Bear. All 225 gr PT's exited, including one buck that was facing me. I hit him at the neck/chest and the bullet exitedthrough his private parts. I toasted the lungs, top of the pump station yet the guts were not busted up!

The 35 Whelen loaded with the 225 gr PT is awesome for deer and bear. Load it with the 250 gr PT and it is a penetrating powerhouse.
Here are some recovered bullets from water jugs at 100 yds,
225 gr AB and 250 gr PT
