35 Whelen puts the hammer down

I have always been interested in the 35 Whelen. Think it would be a fantastic dark timber elk gun.

Congrats on the smack down!

Thanks for the bullet pics, the Whelen has incredible power, just love this thing. Yeah for sure it would be a terrific Dark Timber Elk Gun !!The Bullet weight and power it possess is there. I love the DRT effect it has on Deer. :) If Nosler ever comes out with a 200 Grain Bullet offering I would most likely load it up. AB or Partition would fit the bill.

Here are a few more recovered bullets from the 25 Whelen.

Seeing this post makes me jealous :) the only gun I ever sold that I have regretted was my 35 whelen. It was in a lefty version and I just can't find another one.
If I ever find another it will be in my safe so quick that the person that had it will not remember what it looked like

May everyone one on the forum have a blessed New Year and I look forward to lots more interesting stories and comments.

Blessings,
Dan

JD338,
I like the looks of those bullets, were those shot into water jugs as well? What load are you shooting with the 225 Partition?

Sask Boy,
For the record, I am left handed too. I learned earlier in life to shoot right handed rifles. My Whelen is the 700 Classic version, Right Hand model.
Although my remaining rifles are left hand. My theory is, it doesn't matter how fast you can get consecutive shots off, only make the first one count. :)
Even with the power this cartridge has, you can not neglect bullet placement.

Anyway tomorrow and Monday it's back to the woods for me with the Whelen, will update the results later.

Don

Yes I could do that but I am just waiting on a price on a 700 left action and I have already spoke with Bell & Carlson. Making a 35 whelen should not be to hard even for a guy like me  I will have the barrel done 24" or 26" not sure which and then I should be in business. My grandson looks like he is going to be a lefty so he will get it eventually.

Blessings,
Dan

DON,

Yes, bullets were recovered from water jugs. I will have to check my records for exact loads but I used IMR 4064, AA2015 and now RL 15.
I also have the M700 Classic 35 Whelen.

Maybe if I called my latest CDL a 25 Whelen, it would be a better shooter for me.... Scotty

JD338,
Did you see any increase in velocity using IMR4064 vs RL15 Powder?

Thanks for the info JD, nice looking gun. My Dad had a muzzle break installed on the one I have, I shoot it with it off.

Saskboy,
Wow, a Whelen with a 24-26" barrel including a Bell & Carlson Stock! I want to see a pic when you get it done. With that barrel length you should get some nice velocity one would think! :)

You will get higher velocities with RL 15.

JD338,
I thought velocities would be higher, I really like working with RL15. I'm satisfied with my load. :)

Rogue River,
That's what I hear also, the Whelen has enough power to put the hammer down on Elk and Bear. There is nothing like a 35 caliber.
I remember when my Dad initially bought this gun for himself, being with him when he sighted it in that day. Couldn't believe how well it shot/ grouped with 200 grain factory loads. I have always admired this gun and the Whelen's ability. I was pretty excited when Dad gave it to me this year.

Don

Man, I would have a hard time hunting with much else if my pops gave me a Whelen!

Rl15 works really well with the 225's and 250's. Another powder to check out also, if you are so inclined is TAC. It is supposed to be a good one for the Whelen also. Scotty

Thanks Scotty, and Happy New Year to everyone.

Another great powder is Varget, 60 gr with a 225 gr AccuBond clocked 2763 fps out of my 22" King barrel. I use it over RL 15 now.

Gerry,
That's a smokin load! Questions are: Is this load beyond Max? Is this a compressed load? Any pressure signs? New brass or resized brass? How are your groups at 100 Yds? I am happy with my current load but a little more velocity would be nice too. :)

Thanks for sharing your data,
Don

That sounds like a great one! Heck, Varget is probably right in the spot for the Whelen. I know Varget might be a little more temp stable also for you Northerners and drastic weather having folks! Scotty

I have not tried Varget in the 338-06, since R15 has done such a great job velocity and accuracy wise for me. They are very similar in burn rates and Varget seems to be the choice of many shooters and hunters with the calibers we are discussing. There has never been a problem with sensitivity to temperature swings in any of my hunts using R15.
