35 Whelen puts the hammer down

In all the years (30+) I have shot reloads I've wondered that too. Another gimmick if you ask me!

This is year 36 for me hand loading and I have never used any kind of primer sealant.
The color coding is for bullet weight identification.

Hey Gerry,
Just picked up some Varget, :) going to give her a try in the Whelen with the 225 AccuBond. Gonna load some up and maybe get to the range this week-end.

Will keep everyone informed as it unfolds.

Don

Good luck Don. Varget might be a nice option to RL 15 in the Whelen.

We will see, I really like the RL15 powder. Want to see how the velocity is in reference to POI grouping. Just realized I'm down to 5-bullets. Have to pick up some more 225 Accubonds. I'll load up the 5 and try them with one load in the mean time.

Don,

With two good powders on hand you should find a great load with the AccuBond, look forward to seeing the results.

Normally I'm thinking 250 gr. bullets for the Whelen. After all, it was designed for that weight and heavier back in 1923.
However, two years back i drew a tag for the Kaibab national Forest and the state of Arizona asked hunters in the Kaibab and Arizona Strip country to voluntarily use all copper bullets because of that oversized buzzard, the condor. As I wanted to blood my new custom Whelen, I used the 225 gr. barnes TSX bullet. Cost me the only decent deer I saw. He was standing perfectly still broadside and it would have been an easy shot. Problem was there was a bunch of does behind him and if I'd shot, I probably would have taken out a couple of does as well. Not a good idea. The next two years I did not draw a tag for deer or elk so did an antelope hunt last years and used my .270 for that hunt. I didn't draw for anything again in 2010 so I booked a cow elk hunt in new mexico witht he same outfitter that I did the anteope hunt. Finally got to see whtat an all copper bullet could do and was highly impressed. The bullet hit the elk and she went down so fast she bounced. It's been just a bit over a month now and I'm still amazed at how fast she went down and the massive damage to the internals. I'm planning on doing a lot more hunting with my .35 Whelens. (I have three. A custom Mauser, a Remington 700 Classic and a Ruger M77RS tang safety gun.) You know what I like.
