35 Whelen puts the hammer down

Gerry,
That's a smokin load! Questions are: Is this load beyond Max? Is this a compressed load? Any pressure signs? New brass or resized brass? How are your groups at 100 Yds? I am happy with my current load but a little more velocity would be nice too. :)

Thanks for sharing your data,
Don

Nosler reloading data shows they go up to 60.5 gr of Varget for 2800 fps in a 24" barrel. The load is safe in my gun but work up slowly just like any other load, I have used new and brass that has been fired all ready. Brass life is good and my groups are usually around 1" @ 100 yards. Another good powder to use in the Whelen.

Gerry

Those are some impressive velocities that are going to generate some pretty good horse power.

Yeah JD338 I'm thinking the same thing. Another winter/spring time project to try with the Whelen. :)

Gerry,
Thanks for the insight. Your load, as JD stated, certainly has some horsepower. I will be purchasing some Varget real soon.

Don

Varget is a great powder too. Works well in alot of cartridges, just about like RL15. Scotty

gerry,

I don't think you want Sask boy to see this. He is always talking about the LH Whelen that he let get away. Good looking job on the rifle.

Yes I did see those photographs what a beauty :) It was my own fault, that I do not have one. I will hopefully have one by the summer and then look out. I will have to get DrMike to post my photographs.
Well tomorrow I am going fishing  my wife and I have taken in a 14 year old that has called me Papa Dan since he was 2 he comes from a troubled home but hopefully some time on the lake will help him and we get to spend time together. We are supposed to get a break in the weather so it should be fun maybe even put a few walleye in the pail.

Blessings,
Dan

Sask, good luck with the Whelen, I hope you are able to get one. I also wish you lots of luck on the water with the boy. Hope the Walleyes are biting! Scotty

Where you fishing, Dan? It is okay to post a few pictures of the day's effort when fishing for walleye.

Heck yeah. I hope to do some ice fishing while I am up here in ME/NH for the Winter. It would be neat to see some pictures of the pro's doing it. Scotty

I live in Regina and we have one of the top walleye lakes in the world within 1 hour of my house.
The lake is called Last Mountain and if anyone know Saskatchewan that may be stretching mountain abit
We will take the camera and I will get some photos of the day.
Hey guys thanks for thinking of the Mrs. & me with as I call him my grandson his name is Chevy we are going to try and get this corrected.

Blessings,
Dan

Looks cool, you take great pictures JD.

I could never get the 250 to shoot but my gun loves the 225's of any make. The 225 gr Partition is one of my favorite bullets.

Check out the new thread I started on the new Ruger No.1 35 Whelen

Dan,

At least you will be close to home.

Jim,

That is a great picture; the cartridge just oozes power even standing there.

Gerry,
Nice looking rifle as I too am left handed. Hope to restock the Whelen Dad gave me some day.

JD338,
Great looking loads you posted. By the looks of the pic it appears you are either sealing the primers and/or using Match primers, could you elaborate.

Don

My go to primer is Federal GM210M primers. I color code my shells with Magic Markers. Red indicated heavy bullet.
FWIW, Green is mid weight and Blue is light weight bullets. Just my way of identifing my loads.

Thanks buddy,
I'm always looking for ways to treak or improve my loads. Have you ever used any primer sealant?

Don

DON,

If my primer pocket is loose enough to permit water to enter, I have a bigger problem than moisture. Perhaps sealants are beneficial, but I haven't seen the benefit in a long time. Many people do use nail polish (I don't know what shade) or they buy George and Roy's Custom Primer Sealant. Undoubtedly, this step gives a measure of comfort. I question the necessity, however.
