Recently picked up a 357 Mag, Taurus 627 Tracker with 4" ported bbl.

Want to use it for protection from black bears/cougars during elk season.

Also want to use it on the occasional coyote/deer out to max of 50 yards.

What are some of the better loads for my intended purpose??

BTW- I intended on putting a scope/red dot on the pistol as the salesman assured me I could. Well after I bought the pistol, I called Taurus and asked them directly and they said you cant put a scope/red dot on the 4" version, only the 6.5". So needless to say, I"m kinda pised at the guy, and pised at myself for not doing my homework. I wanted a scope/red dot to make reliable 50 yard hits if need be. I'm ok with open sites, but there not my favorite. Accuracy is sub par in my opinion for what I want to do with it. PMC 158g JSP are clocking 1250fps and shooting 5-6" 7 shot groups at 25 yards free handed. 50 yards isn't looking to promising from this point of view.

Handloads and practice should help cut groups considerably. I know a scope/red dot would help considerably as well, but thats obviously out of the picture. I"m by no means a pistol person, just wanted to play with something different and have something for protection.

This is only my 2nd pistol. The first was a Ruger 40 S & W and it was worthless. YOu couldn't hit a milk jug at 10 yards with it. I sold it after the first box of shells. Revolvers are a little more accurate with the windage/elevation.

Remmy,

Congratulations on your 357 Mag.
I would use a 158 gr JHP with H110 or W296.
You could also try the 180 gr PT for deeper penetration.

If the scope or red dot won't work, take a look at the Bushnell (Eo Tech) scope. It has a heads up display, same as our military uses in fighter jets.
I have the Eo Tech on my bow and its very accurate!

If you can use a scope, look no further than a Leupold M8 2x scope. Its what I use on my S&W 629 Classic.

First of all, you bought the right kind of revolver. I've had a Taurus Model 65 Stainless for nearly 20yrs, and it's a real joy. With the right handloads, I've printed 1.5" six shot groups at 20yds, standing 'Weaver'. Mine has fixed sights, rather than adjustable, and with most loads, prints just about an inch to the left and low from point of aim, but I've come to accept that over the years, as it still prints small groups just a little off. I bought mine for personal defense, and carried it for a while (until I got a Glock 23 in 40S&W). I still love mine.

As for deer and bear at 50yds, you're going to be pushing it with a 357Mag. Even the best loads are going to be marginal at best. I'd start looking at the 158gr hollow points as a good starting place, though mine was more accurate with 125gr hollows, and yours may prefer yet another weight. Any way you cut it, with due practice (which means frequent range trips) you should be able to get everything down to under 8" at 50yds. That will certainly suffice for hunting purposes. You might get down to 4-5" at 50yds, which would be stellar.

I think you'll come to love your Taurus. Then you'll go buy one in 44Mag and start out shooting 44Spl in it to get used to it. A 44Mag makes a dandy deer and bear handgun.

Congrats on the .357. Have one also though mine is a S&W 65 4". I carried a # 19 for several years as a duty weapon.

For woods gun I prefer a good 158 grain HP also, with Hornady XTP being my favorite. I carry 125 grain when it's performing city work.

Jim- Was definately thinking of the 180g PT for deer/bear. Am thinking real hard about the 125g XTP for coyotes as well. I was actually going to start with H110 as it seems to produce pretty good velocities/accuracy at higher ends with several weight bullets, according to Noslers guide anyways. How does the Bushnell Eo Tech scope mount?? Never even heard of it... If it will work on the 4" tracker, I'd definately consider it. I called Taurus yesterday and they said theres no way to mount a scope/red dot on this particular model. Was thinking of laser grips but I dont think oregon allows them for hunting. How do laser sights work anyways?? Are they like scopes where you can adjust them and get them sighted in to where the laser points or what?? I just dont know much about pistols at all.

Dubyam- If I could get 2" groups at 25 yards free handed with reloads and open sights, that would be awesome. I was also hoping for about 5" groups at 50 yards. I never did shoot at 50 yards because I shot them all up getting it sighted in at 25 yards, then shooting my 10" steel gong, this is where I was shooting about 5-6" groups at 25 yards on my steel plate. To be able to reliably kill a coyote at 50 yards, I'd need no larger then a 5" group and probly closer to 4", for deer, as long as its under 10" it will probly work, but it aint gonna cut it for coyotes. I'm not planning on shooting bear at 50 yards, just coyotes/deer.

Will 158g HP's or XTP's work ok for deer, or should I go with the heavier 180g slugs like the PT or XTP???

Definately going to try some 125g XTP's for coyotes and vermin.

Great weapon Remmy and congrats! I have had many Taurus' and man they are workhorses. They are tooled as is SW so accuracy is great. My current 7 shot 66 shoots the 158 nosler JHP at 1350 fps (4") with 18 grains of lilgun!

I ran a couple of sims for you/ Max is listed at 43k+ but I limited this to 42K. Also I stipulated 105% max loading density that i why it peaks out at 16 gr of Lilgun at 34K psi and does not include the 18 gr.

Bear in mind, Rem, that I got those groups when I was shooting weekly, and averaging about 250rds weekly, at that. It is certainly possible to keep them under 5" at 50, but it will take a lot of training and comfort with the revolver. I'd try shooting a lot of double action early in the game, as this will really give you fine trigger control and sight picture control, which will be paramount when you start trying to shoot yotes at 50yds.

I had great results velocity-wise with H110 (but be careful near max, as a tiny bit of powder makes a big difference in pressure). I had good accuracy results with Hodgdon Clays and Universal Clays, but the velocity is not as high. As for bullets, I think you'd be well off with either the 158gr or 180gr, whichever one shoots the best in your gun.

I have a Taurus 608 with the 6.5 comp'd barrel. I haven't actually taken a first shot at a deer with it but I have put one down with it.

Mine is scary accurate with 158gr SJHP Magtech bullets. Using Hodgdon longshot powder for target loads and Lil'gun for field loads, both produce excellent accuracy out of mine. Wasn't able to recover that bullet from the deer, but from from shooting water jugs they expanded very nice.

You said this is your second pistol, and it's a good choice! I don't know your shooting history with pistols, but in general they are little harder to master and shoot as well as you probably do with rifles. My suggestion is to load up a bunch of light loads, even 38specials to shoot the crap out of that gun to learn how it shoots. It'll save a lot of wear and tear on you and help out with the marksmanship. Kind of like shooting a .22 rifle instead of the big centerfires all the time.

I have a S&W 868 w/8.375 " bbl.
I have been shooting 158gr xtp's with Unique with great results.
I shot them over the crony but never saved the data. I have the load sighted in at 50yds. I wouldn't hesitate to blast a deer with it.

I had a taurus (I think 608) with 6" barrel. Couldn't get good accuracy or velocity. I could be wrong but I don't think you want to use the above QC data that was set at 42k pressure. I think those will be too hot of loads in a revolver frame as what you have.
Anyhow I traded it for a 12" contender barrel with a red dot. (and I realize a single shot isn't great for protection). I LOVE THE CONTENDER.
I couldn't get above 1250 fps with the 6 shooter or better than 3-4" groups off sand bags at 25 yds. Now I'm doing 1690 fps and sub inch 25 yds groups. This means my velocity at 100 yds would be about the same as the muzzle on my old 6 shooter.
I"m looking forward to our wisconsin deer season with this bad boy this November!!

JD-I dont think that bushnell sight will work because it says it attaches to a weaver style mount/base.

I just need to find a mount/base that would work for it, then I"d be set.

However, according to the folks at Taurus, there is nothing out there that will work for the 4" tracker.

I think its dumb that they dont incorporate the same technology or whatever to mount a scope on a 4" bbl, but they will with a 6".

I think you should talk with Shawn Carlock and see what he recommends.
If it can't be done, good reason to pick up a S&W 629 Classic.

Remmy....

That cracks me up as I did the exact same thing... my first handgun was a Ruger .40....I couldn't hit a barn if I was standing inside of it !

When I went to AK a few years back archery hunting, we wanted a little back-up protection not knowing what to expect there.
I purchased a Taurus in .44 Mag to take along. I don't get much trigger time with it, but it's DRASTICALLY better than what I had and I'm much more confident with it.....
I'm in the same boat as well as mounting a scope on it..... :? You'll have a good time with it..... post some results once you start working on loads.

Remmy, My 4" Ruger likes a max load of 2400 behind the Nosler 158gr bullets. The Nosler bullets by far shoot the best out of my little gun.
