I finaly got my reloading dies for my .358 winchester today.
Of course I quickly put together a couple of loads and with any luck I will be shooting her tommorow.
I looked all over town for some IMR-3031 and or some AA-2520, but no luck
So I used W-748 , and for use with the Willams peep sight, I loaded the speer 220 grain Flat point, at what I hope will give me around 2400 FPS. 25 each
And the other load witch I expect to use with the scope is the 200 grain Hornady spire point.
The Hornady Should be a good all around load for the rifle.
If I can keep the speer on the paper at 100 yards with the peep i will be very happy.
With th scope i ecpect to get somthing close to 2 inches. Witch for a savage 99 with a 20 inch tube should be able to get me clean kills at 250 Yards. I may be to optomistic there but tommorow will give me my 1st clue.

748 is a fine powder for the 358. I've had really good success with 47.5 grains and a 225 grain Partition in my Hawkeye. With the 220 grain Speer, you should readily achieve what you are looking for. It'll be good to hear what you learn at the range.

Is it easy to get enough IMR-4895 in a 358 case for either the 200 or 225gr bullets? I ask because I oridginaly tired Varget and I can't get over 47.0 grs with the 200gr spire point and maybe? 48.0 with the 200gr PSP-CL.

I had H4895 on hand for my 35rem which is tops for it. I think 48.0 is very do able with it in the 358win. It worked fine for the 200gr bullets (46.0-47.0grs) but think I can get better with the 225gr bullets(46.5grs) and a different powder. You have said IMR-4895 is about the best if it fits easaly in the 358 case I think I will give it a try.

I had help from guys at marlinowners some years back with the 35rem so whats you two best picks for the 358win and 225 gr partitions? and for that matter the 200gr spire point.

My rifle is a Rem 700 Classic short action with a shilen 20.5" # 3 barrel VXIII 1.5-5 So its looks just like the new 77 hawkeye. I shot two cloverleafs with 46.0grs H4895 and 200 spire points at 2450fps. I hunted with it and got a 7-pointer. But I have yet to reproduce theose groups with the same ammo but they were still 1.25"-1.5" and more powder with the 200grainers stated to open up. The partitions where around 1.75-2.0" and at 2430fps.

IMR4895 is one of my favourite powders for the 358 Winchester. If I were confined to only one powder for the 358, this would be one that would get serious consideration. I have gone as high as 50 grains with the 225 TSX (listed as max in Barnes No. 3). Nosler (No. 6) lists 49.5 grains as max for the 225 Partition. Sierra (No. 5) lists 50.7 grains as max with the 200 grain Sierra KG. Hodgdon lists 49 grains as max with the 200 grain Winchester ST.

H4895 should work quite well in the 358. I have used it a few times, and it worked well. Other powders that have worked well are H335, Benchmark, IMR3031, 10X and TAC. I have really been focused recently on 10X and TAC, which appear to give me a slight edge in velocity. I don't know that groups are any better, however. BL-C(2) and Varget have both worked for me with 200 grain bullets. Bullet recently reports excellent results in his Hawkeye with 2495. All these mid-range powders should work well for you.

It sounds as if you have a good shooting rifle. It is certainly built on a great action. There is nothing wrong with 2450 fps and 200 grain spire points. That is plenty accurate out to 250 yards. 1.5 inch groups will still be less than minute of deer at 300 yards. Since you have a bolt action, try playing with seating depth to see if that makes a difference in accuracy. I don't have that ability on my BLR, but with the Hawkeye I am able to play around with OAL. Though the magazine on your rifle will be somewhat restrictive, you do have a little room to play, and it may make a big difference.

I use 50 gr ramshot tac with magnum primers with 225tsx barnes in my 20 inch barrel BLR and the velocity chronographed at 2414 fps, this is the max load for my blr browning.

Went looking for the powders i wanted for my .358.
IMR-3031 IMR-4895 and AA-2025, but had no luck. Decided to try H-4895 instead.
Not much data around for the Combo.
Anybody using it ?
The Bullets I plan to try 1st are a 225 grain siera BT and a 220 grain Speer flatt point.
