35whelen just got back from JESreboring

I've been really happy with my M70 that JES bored from 30-06 to 35 Whelen. I really enjoy hunting with that rifle. It's about perfect for he ranges I shoot while hunting whitetails here. Most shots are 100 yards or less, with occasional shots reaching out to 200-250.

You know Guy...you have the 25-06, the .375 and the 1917 Enfield...you should really consider sending off that Mod 700 CDL '06 you have to JES and get it reamed to the 35 Whelen (preferably AI!) and try it out! :)

Gah!

And get rid of my .30-06????

Young John has taken possession of the 1917, so I've got the 700 CDL as "my" .30-06, and I'm not about to ream it out to some un holy .35 caliber aberration!

Ahhh...fear of the "unknown"...that's why most young men are afraid of Red heads when they are dating, ha. Can't blame you on keeping the 30-06...I just got my umpteenth one in that Mod 70 FWT, ha. I have discovered that "I just can't live w/o a good 30-06", no matter how much I love my 35 WAI! ha

We can only hope that Scotty reads this and takes it to heart.

I hear what your saying. Joel Douglas has shown the light. I'll find one. It's going to have to be a P64 though I believe.

Glad you like your "new" rifle. There's not a thing wrong with those push feed M70's. I love mine. While the 35 Whelen intrigues me, I wouldn't be without a 30-06 in the safe. There's just something about the '06 that is "right" in my mind. When I hold up a finished shell, the proportion of it all really seems near perfect. The bullets aren't small and hard to handle while loading. The neck is nice and long. The shoulder and taper are such that it'll always feed well. I get the feeling most 35 Whelen fans feel the same way, it's just more of a good thing.

The 35 Whelen does everything many of the big magnums do but without the thump. I load mine with 225gr. Accubonds and they are devastating on Elk & Moose. I know some of the other members shoot a 250gr. bullet and are extremely happy with them as well.
It seems that anything you shoot out of the 35 Whelen is accurate and hits like Thor's Hammer (y).

Blessings,
Dan

Without a doubt. I'm sorta stuck on these 200's right now. Pretty interesting if they will shoot.

Bret, I couldn't agree more. Very well designed case.

See, this is why I had a pre64 30-06 in hand and THEN sent the Classic for the rebore.

You can't be without a 30-06. It's just not right.

Yep I'll never get rid of my 30-06
it's my go to rifle when I need something I can depend on right now. You can keep everything above it and below it. I like my 35Whelen ( both versions ) but push come to shove the 30-06 will be in my hands, it won 2 world wars and you can't knock on that kind of performance.

Got to bring this back up since I'm curious as to how the the rifle shoots and love hearing success story's.

Yes, post seemed to lose momentum, I am always interested in how rifles and calibres perform (y)?

Blessings,
Dan

If anyone knows him maybe they can give him a call to see if he is Okay and that we are concerned about him.

I bet he is probably hunting or working. He pops in and out of here occasionally.

Funny how you guys started wondering about me a few days before I post a topic..... My nose musta been itchin hahahaha
So I started to break in the rifle, using a random box of hornady something or other......
Kept shooting the same damn hole!!!!! Shoot, clean, shoot, clean...... I finally decided to shoot a group just out of curiosity because it seemed to be shooting so well!!!
3 shots under an inch! And then the copper came out so darn easy, I decided that further break-in was unnecessary.
Fast forward to october, I wanted to shoot my elk with it so I grabbed a box of Nosler Custom 200AB and went to the bench.
It shot better than the hornady, both groups I shot were near 1/2". I did have to adjust the scope a tad, POI was a little off..... I did not chronograph...
So I used noslers advertised velocity and BC and I came up with some drop data for the CDS and went huntin!!!
I haven't cleaned it since..... life is busy.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all!!!!!
