Ok, you guys twisted my arm and I ended up buying it.
Good thing I have all that H&H brass, die set and bullets...lol

Those were dangerous items to have, they ended up attracting a new gun :) You should be happy with it, let us know how it shoots.

It is always indicative of a pending purchase of a new gun when brass, die sets and/or orphaned bullets appear in the reloading room. Hmmmm. What does it mean that I recently acquired 8X68S brass and a set of dies?

DrMike,

Something tells me you might have a new addition pretty soon...lol

Ya' think? I have a 284 Win and a 7X57 coming right now. Yup! I have dies and brass on hand.

That's the way it works for me too.

I would think the 375 wouldn't be hurt with a 20" tube much at all. Like Mike says, maybe a 100FPS or maybe a touch more, but it uses relatively fast powders, so I can't see you losing out.

Sounds like a handy thumper though!

I have to agree with Scotty on this one :) ..you wont give up more than 15-20 fps per inch, I'm shooting Norma 300gr swift a frames (2559 fps) advertised MV out of my Sako 85 Kodiak, and getting an average of 2510-2515 out of the 21.3" tube

I agree, you are not going to loose that much velocity.
The big 300 gr PT at 2400 fps is serious stopping power.

Well now, this is getting spooky. I have an old safari grade m70 in 375 HH that I've worked with quite a bit for the last 20 years. It consistently shoots 2 inch groups at best. I've tried all kinds of combinations and never did any better than that. From time to time I thought about re-barreling, but it's a pre 64 and really, how tight do I really need a 375 to shoot?. Well at this point I'll never sell it, the bore is rough and wouldn't pass muster from a serious collector, so why not stick a 20 inch barrel on it? Pillar bed it while I'm at it. I'll keep it in the old stock, way too much character there. Jeepers, last time I thought about this I was going to go with a 26 inch tube. Fiddles, why do I keep logging on you guys keep costing me money:)

You will have very little velocity loss over a 24 inch barrel.

i have used a pre 64 that was rebarreled to 20 inch stainless steel Atkinson barrel since about 1982. Shot hundreds of rounds thorugh it with both improved and std cases. (It is a blown out case with a 25 degree shoulder). Most of my veocity loss w std cases was from fire forming. I lost about 50 fps from my freinds std pre 64 375 which was 25 inches long as I recall. I wold not hesitate to buy that rifle. Medium slow powders like 4064 may work better for you than the 4831 or 4350 class? Try the 250, 270 or 300 grain North Fork bonded solid base. A cut above even the Swift.
