Hi everyone, I'm just about ready to pick up my new S&W 657 Performance Center. I plan on using this as a backup while I'm bow hunting Montana this year. Does anyone have any pet 41 mag loads they would like to share? I'm thinking about using a heavy cast bullet for this.

I'm not sure what you would consider a heavy bullet, but I shoot the Lyman #410610 which dresses out close to 220 grains. I know there are heavier bullets available but I would think this one should be all you'd ever need in a .41 Mag---JMO.

I'm pushing these with an older batch of 2400 and charging to 18.0 grains. It's been a long time since I fired my loads over a chronograph and I did not keep extensive records in those days, but it seems like I was getting around 1300 fps last time I checked. My 57 has a six-inch barrel. When I bought the powder I have been using 18 grains was a listed load, but some have admonished me that newer data doesn't go quite so far. I have a newer batch of 2400 but have not had to get into it yet, but when I do I'll start from scratch since lotsa folks have suggested to me that the newer batches of 2400 are faster burning. I'll just have to find out for myself.

I was considering a bullet in the 240-265 grain range. I just looked at the Beartooth site and their 265WLN looks like the perfect bear medicine. Thanks for the load data Fotis!

...well, if you can find a box or two of the discountinued Speer 220gr. JSPs, I'd go w/ them, or a 240-265gr. hard cast over a healthy dose of Lil'Gun or Enforcer. Really prefer the Lil'Gun over H110 or 2400, chrono says very good velocities, book says less pressure, ears say considerably less muzzle blast, good case fill so no "double charging". I'd stick to cast w/ gas checks like the Oregon Trail Trucast or Cast Performance...

...I shoot a lot of 210gr. XTP's & DeepCurls certainly wouldn't hesitate on a deer, but for "bear" I kinda like a heavy softpoint...

Just a request for you .41 guys... There are NO .41 mag bullet tests posted in our Bullet Test section...

Just load up something you find interesting, fill up a mess of plastic one-gallon milk jugs with water, back off about 10 yards and let one fly!

Tell us how many jugs it penetrated, how much it expanded and what the doggone thing weighed when you recovered it. Muzzle velocity is nice too!

If you get a chance...

Thanks, Guy

Well, that's just about the bullet I would suggest... I was thinking to myself "250 or so hard cast of an LBT WFN design."

Even though I haven't a .41 mag, I think 265 cast would be good. I would might even go with Beartooth 280 or 300 gr. myself. I just personally think the extra weight would be a good thing when one has the possiblity of altercations with claws and teeth in those regions. I'm just not sure one can have too much mass for penetration, but it is a balancing act of all aspects. One aspect depends on your recoil management to gun sights. Don't do much good if recoil over shoots sights, as the heavier will shoot higher most often.

And seeings they have sizing options, get an accurate measurement of the cylinder throats, and get them sized as close as possible yet reliable feeding allows also. That is equally if not more important for accuracy, as the rest of the factors in the decision on a cast choice imo.

In my 41 mag Blackhawk with the 6 1/2" bbl I used the Rem 210 gr JSP (not HP) buillet over max. Lyman charge of H110. This load was clocking around 1500 fps and was a real stopper with a good balance of penetration and expansion on big whitetails. I also shot one good sized blackie weighing 357 lbs with this load. It was very accurate with "manageable" recoil from my rather light New Model Blackhawk. Haven't used the handgun much anymore as the type of cover I hunt has changed and I haven't been able to chase bears for several years now.

I think the .41 mag round loses some potential with bullets over 220 grains. Not enough case capacity to maximize velocity/energy with those big slugs, but even being slower they certainly will penetrate.

Read this last night but wasn't thinking correctly. Do a search on the smith-wessonforum.com site for .41 mag, or cruise the reloading section. Lots of fellow .41 addicts there, lots of very good information. Lots of folks like H110. In my 57's the 210 Rem JSP does well over AA #5 and 2400, altho I haven't pushed them much past 1250, which isn't exactly bear stopping power.

Cool thread here. Always wanted a 41 Magnum. Seems like a very good cartridge.

Beartooth makes EXCELLENT bullets. The 250 WFN's shoot REALLY well in my 44 Rem Mag.
