I meant to post this a while back. I shot a big doe with the .416 Taylor using a 400gr Partition. Velocity was 2350fps. Range 200 yards. Perfect performance. Yes I am a bit nuts but did this as a test to see if I had a true one load work up for a trip to Africa so I can shoot plains game and buff with the same load. It is shooting 1" groups and shooting as flat as the .375. I am impressed. I carried my Rigby as well but didn't kill anything with it. reflex264

I already knew you were nuts!! I thought about using one of the 300gr TSX bullets on a deer at 2900fps from my Rigby. I figured it would kill the deer but thought I might have to prove it............. The blood on the ground around this doe shot with the Taylor was 15 to 20 feet on both sides. This pic doesn't do it justice but you will get the point. There was blood everwhere. relfex264

Those does are vicious. I'd say you're a lucky man! Last doe I shot was felled with a .458 cal bullet and anything less is like using a varmint cartridge. Stunts like this are simply tempting fate. A man really ought to know better.

Be careful and dogggone it - Use Enough Gun!

reflex264 and Pop,

Now I don't feel so bad shooting deer with my 338 RUM.

Congratulations reflex264.

Yep, that ought to kill them..................... reflex264

I feel the same way. If I wait till I get to Africa to shoot my 416 Bee I might never shoot her.

You should of used the E-bullet, you would of gotten better penetration and blood trail
Good Hunting

Nice buck, congratulations.
Beautiful rifle! What was your load?

JD,

Thanks - this was with a Federal factory load using the 410 gr Woodleigh Weldcore. I haven't got around to playing with the .416 yet, but plan too this spring with the 400 gr Partition. If I can get it and the new Nosler solids to shoot to the same point I think I have my load for Africa when I go in (hopefully) a few years.

The price of factory shells has just plain got to hurt.
Nosler claims that the PT and the Solid will hit to the same POI at reasonable ranges, I would have to think 100 yds.

Good for you on your future safari. Start loading for your Rigby and keep testing on your "mini safaris" here at home.
Keep us posted on your load development.

JD,

You aren't kidding about the cost of factory rounds in .416 Rigby. I'm down to about 15 rounds from the last couple of boxes I bought. I think they were $125 each. Today the Federals are about $100 more than that. This is definitely a caliber where handloading will save some $$$.

I was really happy to see the new Nosler solids. The flat point seems to be the way to go from what I've read. It should be fun to work on a load.

If anyone has any starting points I'd be happy to see them. I am looking to duplicate factory velocity ~2400 fps with good accuracy out of my Ruger. I don't feel the need to push up the velocity just for the sake of more FPS. Thanks to all.

I am going to start them at 97.0grs of H4831 and work up. Should be very safe. reflex264
