Here are some of the targets from today. I wanted to go out and verify zero's on my 270WSM and 45-70. I brought my 338WM along, to rezero for the 275gr Speers. Anyhow, I also stretched the legs on the 45-70 a bit. Talk about fun. You could take the shot a hear the WHUMP a little later. Pretty cool as it was smacking the plywood!

I only took a few rounds of 45-70 ammo, as I don't wanna burn up my limited supply of PT's. The first three were shot pretty quick and the group shows, still plenty for anything that the 45-70 would be pointed at. My load is 300gr Partition, 59gr of H4198, CCIBR2's and WW cases (clocks 2330FPS)

Here are some shot groups from my 270WSM. The load is 150gr BT (2nds), 66gr RL22, CCI250's and WW Cases (clocked 3100FPS). This thing never fails to amaze me how well it shoots. Just doesn't really matter. My 300 yard groups were in the 2.5" range. It is hard to tell, but the third shots are just off the paper. Either way, I feel pretty confident if all else fails I can grab it!

First group out of a fresh barrel at 100 yards.

300 yard Targets. I shot the first one at the lower right. I got two on the paper and had one in the wood, made a two click correction and shot the upper left and it put me 2 rds on paper and another in the wood. Great grouping, but I went back one click and left it as is.

Overall, I got the 45-70 zeroed and calibrated out to 300 yards with the Leupold SABR scope. I used the "Three Pellet" setting and it seems to be pretty close for the 45-70 shooting a 300gr PT at 2330FPS.

After I got done shooting targets I put some pumpkins up at the 300 yard line and proceeded to double check zeros. The 270WSM put a caliber sized hole in the front and about a 3" exit. Same for the 338 with the 275gr Speer. The 45-70 made a caliber sized entrance hole and a 6" hole out the back. Not very scientific, but pretty fun. It was cool firing the 45-70 and hearing the whop as that big bullet hit!

The 338WM didn't seem to really wanna shoot like it has in the past. I really should have taken the 250gr PT's I have loaded and ran them across the chrono and put them on paper to see how they shot today, but I didn't wanna spend all day at the range. I might just steal the VX3 off the 338 and put it on the 25-06! Scotty

So no pumpkins are safe from your rifles? That 270 WSM load looks pretty much like it is ready for anything. The 45-70 will work just fine to take down about anything you want to hunt out to reasonable ranges. The 338 looks as if it is ready as well. Some fine shooting there, Scotty.

Thanks Mike. Yeah, the 270WSM is the "30-06" of my safe. It just always shoots well and delivers the goods. I am very happy with the 150gr BT load for it though. I have a very similar load using 150gr PT's but I figure there isn't a deer in Va or NY that is going to slow that 150gr BT down much. I am however really looking forward to using that 45-70 for something though! What an awesome round! I was blown away with my 200 and 300 yard groups. I know there are probably a truck load of folks that have shot better from 45-70's, but out of that little carbine, MOA groups out to 300 is pretty dang good in my book. The recoil is pretty fresh on them though. The scope did catch the bridge of my nose at 300 yards, but a little blood just lets you know you are still alive. I have 4+ inches of eye relief, but it does jump pretty good.

The 338 really seemed like it wanted to shoot, but I wasn't really shooting it as good as I should have been. I guess I have too many irons in the fire. I am thinking of pulling the scope off of it, and putting it on the 25-06 for the year. The one thing I noticed was how much I love that 2.5x8 VX3! It is just a great scope for so many rifles. The B&C reticle is easy to use and makes hit out to 500 pretty easy. Same goes for the SABR Leupold on the 45-70. Scotty

Scotty,

Nice shooting! The 45-70 looks to be under MOA at 300 yds!
