45-70 and 350gr Hot Cor?

I’ve held onto both 4198’s like they are gold, for the price they’ll be when they hit the market again it may as well be gold dust. Lol.
I’ve got 5 lbs of LT-32 I’m hoping will be similar. Haven’t tried any in my 45-70 yet. It’s a fine extruded powder between IMR4198 and RL7. Hopefully I’ll be able to try it soon.
Supposedly rl is coming out with rl11? Don't know if it's going to be the 16/23/26 type powder (you know ....more for the greenies) or something close to AA11/AA11fs?

I shot 5 rounds tonight. The first one was to the left 1.75" but the next 4 created a 1.100" group at 50 yards with a 4x scope. Recoil was not bad. That was with 53 gr of IMR3031. I might back it down to 52gr and see what happens. I'm hoping the first one to the left was due to it being the first jacketed bullet down the barrel.

I'd zero to where the first round impacts.

That will likely fill your tag.

I messed around with the 350 Hot Cor and the 45-70 the last few weeks. With 52.0gr of IMR3031 and a 4x scope, I made a clover leaf at 50 yards. From there I put the peep sight on and shot a 1.5" group at 50 yards and at 25 put 3 shots in the same hole. It is shooting at 1750 fps and I caught one in jug #8 last night. The bullet opened up to .7" and was 332gr. The first 3 jugs were destroyed and jugs 4-8 had a big hole in them. I'm confident in the load and rifle at this point!!!

The canalure is not even close the hot core sits much h lower. Was going to do the same thing out of my 1886 I just picked up. But there is loads for the trap door that still push that bullet to 1700fps. If you look up on speeds web sight and read between the lines you could still bump the powder charge by a couple and still be below rugger #1 loads. But in all honestly the hornady RN is a very strong bullet it almost goes through a 15” western larch green tree stump that load is 44grs imr4198 @ about1800 to 1900 I have not Chrome yet.

I’ve run that 350gr Speer in my 458 Lott at 2780fps. Accuracy has been great and from what I’ve seen of them used by others on Alaskan Gabe it’s a very effective bullet even at higher velocity. I wouldn’t hesitate to use it on any North American big game

I worked up to 50 grains of H4198. That was from a 22" Marlin 1895. It's stout, but below max for the 350 gr Hornady. I suspect that the pure copper jacket on the Swift bullet is "stickier" and didn't want to go above higher with the powder charge because of that.

That was back in 2011... I've umm, "matured" since then. LOL! These days I'm mostly using IMR 3031 for my powerful 45-70 loads. I'm probably about 100 fps lower than the loads I posted back then.

Regards, Guy
i'd have to check my swift load manual, but i'm sure there's h4198 listed i their 350 a-frames.

finally getting to my swift manual and it states h4198 @ 50.0grs is max w/350a-frames in their testing. shows velocity from a 24" @ 2118 and charge load of 87%. didn't state firearm used, only wiseman barrel 1/20"
