I was looking at the Nosler site & saw this bullet, a 300 gr. 45/70 CT, in the list of Bal. Sil. bullets. It puzzles me a bit, is it a thick jacket, is this a "soft" tip, is it just for Deer & down? Also, the 300gr. Part. protectedpt. was listed, is this an error?
Hmmm :?:

No update so far, here is what I do know.

The 45-70 300 gr BST is of a Ballistic Tip design but for tube feed magazines.
The Tip is polycarbonate, just like the BT. It has a good jacket design, and when used at 45-70 speeds, will expand well and retain weight. Designed for deer and bear, not sure about elk.

This bullet will be out later this year, not sure about timing yet.

I will keep you posted, I am anxious to try this bullet out in my 1895 Guide 45-70.

Kind of slow for the Lott; don't you think? Will you be using any powder or just a mag primer?

Well, that would test the jacket!

I know the 300 wt. is popular, but it is short for caliber to me if it expands well. The 300 Part. was an exception to the rule because of the part. in the bullet & was a special niche, I like it alot. I would prefer this type of bullet was a 350 gr. & be able to load it to 2000-2100 or so, esp. with this shape, but an AccuBond. It would smack harder a little further, no I don't use the 45/70 for long range, but occassionally I may shoot 250 or so where I use one. The higher BC makes up for alot of the vel loss & better all around weight I think.

My sources indicate that the bullet expands well and holds together. At 45-70 velocities, an AB isn't needed.

I agree, 300 gr is light for caliber and a 350 gr would be cool. 8)

JD, what I am talking about in reference to the AccuBond is not only the fact it is a bonded bullet, but the fact that it expands alot like a Partition, in that it does not get really large on the front end. As you know, some soft points that hold together well, yet expand well can be like a flat washer, once flat enough a short for caliber bullet will not penetrate like it should, just physics. In other words, I want expansion more like the 300 Part. & boy has it worked for me well!!! And when the cal. is 458 to begin with, I would rather have modest expansion & dramatic penetration. As far as not needing a bonded, for fact. ammo usually not, but for loads of 2200 & better on Hogs, Elk & bigger up clode, I would feel better with bonded or a Part or TSX or have a heavier bullet.

I understand for marketing alot of people like a 300 gr, the small increase in MV on the box & reduced recoil, but I would have much rather had a bullet of this shape in 350gr, now THAT would excite me. I think Guy was onto something with his test of the 350 Hor. & 350 Swift A Frame, they hit about the same & you could load some Swifts for big stuff up close, but for everything else just use the Hornadys. Makes more sense to me than the use of a short 300 all the time.

Maybe if the price is decent they could sell both, Hor. sells alot of the 350 & I think the market is there & it would be possible to fly better than the 325FTX, they could pull from that market too.

I am with you buddy, all the way! I couldn't agree more.
Lets just hope that Nosler decides to keep the 458 300 gr PP in production.
It is by far my favorite bullet for the 45-70. A 350-400 gr PP would be even better!

True. My post was informative only. I use 350 TSX and above for my Lott.

I do agree the 300 NP is the cat's meow.

Pop, I understand it was informative, but you would have to agree that shooting a Coyote end to end at close range could have interesting results, you might stretch him out like a Limo!

Either that or turn him inside out!

I can not wait to try this new bullet out for deer and bear hunting around here. Hope they hit the shelves soon so I can start some reloading and testing.
