Hi fellas, I'm thinking of trading my remlin 45/70 1895GS for a ruger #1 tropical in 375 H&H plus $300...I'm kinda stumped on this one  ..The rifle has maybe 50 rnds through the tube, and in absolute mint condition, need some advise here for sure..Thanks..Lou

I had a .45/70 Marlin for about nine years. Enjoyed the heck out of it.

A few years ago I sold it and bought a nice, used .375 H&H Number One. Have been happier with it from the start. It's a good rifle. Surprisingly accurate and easy to shoot, I keep it sighted-in with 260 gr bullets at 200 yards. Had absolutely no problem taking a good size black bear at 306 yards with one shot. Last summer it proved to be rockchuck accurate too...

Carries well. Fairly mild on recoil - mine does have a Pachmayer Decelerator recoil pad which helps. It can be loaded with 235 - 300 gr bullets. I'm currently working on a mild 1900 fps load with 220 gr bullets too - just for plinking. Would probably be a good whitetail load too.

The big bore Marlin was a very good rifle and I enjoyed it tremendously. I like the .375 Number One even better.

I am certainly not knocking the Marlin 1895. I had an 1895 Marlin that shot extremely well for about all of the 5 years that I had it. I usually keep one big bore banger around ths gun safe just for instance and the present candidate is a 9.3x74R. If it is anywhere near as accurate as my .45-70 Marlin was, I will be happy.

I'm with everyone else here, 375 H&H all the way. Lots of good choices when it come to bullets although it would be hard to beat the 260 gr AccuBond for an all around load.

Lou,

The 375 H&H is a pretty impressive round.

Lou,

A 260 gr AB in the 375 H&H would make for an excellent moose hammer.

Congrats on the 375 Lou! That should be a very fun rifle buddy! Can't wait to hear how it shoots for you! Looks very nice in the pictures as well.

Excellent! Nice to have another .375 H&H Number One here!

I've tried several different loads but these two are very good:

260 gr Nosler AccuBond @ 2620 fps via 69 grains of Reloader 15. This is a mild load, but accurate and effective.

300 gr Nosler Partition (or any other 300 gr bullet I've tried) at about 2550 fps via 75 grains of H4350. I've killed no game with it, but it's accurate and powerful. Recoil is up a notch from the 260 gr load, but not bad.

The 235 gr Speer is a good practice bullet and a buddy tells me they work great on mule deer or elk.

The 270 gr Hornady is accurate, but seems a little fragile in my tests. I suspect it works well enough on mid-sized game.

If you haven't had a Number One before, be aware that sometimes the eye relief on a scope may seem difficult to achieve. A lot of guys like to move the scopes farther rearward on these rifles. That's not hard to do. Let me know if it gives you any trouble along those lines.

Congrats on what should prove to be a fine rifle.

Guy
