I am wondering what 45-70 lever guns to stay away from? I know there are some that have lesser quality and poor barrels compared to others. I would like to know incase I run into one someday.

Both my Marlins were good rifles. Built about 10 years ago I believe.

Marlins built by Remington have had some quality control issues. I see different reports about if that quality has improved in recent months and years.

The only .45/70 I liked better than the Marlin, is the Ruger Number One. My goodness, that thing handles like a magic wand and can take even heavier loads. If your shoulder is up to it...

What Guy said.
If you run into a Marlin 1895, grab it!
I love my little 1895 Guide gun. She is a dream to carry and handle, easy to maneuver in a deer blind or tree stand, accurate and hits like a sledge hammer.

New 599.00 seems to be the going price. Then add about 399.00 for a scope, 60.00 for rings and base, 48.00 for a set of dies, 67.00 for 100 bullets, 75.00 for 100 brass, 28.00 for a can of powder, 7.99 for a shell holder and probably a trigger job......ask me how I know.

Long

And when you shoot your 1895 45-70, it will take that long to take the smile off your face. :)

If you are going to buy a Marlin 1895, make sure that it is proofed "JM" on the side of the barrel. Otherwise, it is a Remington.

I had both the 22 inch and the 18-1/2 inch Guide gun barrels. You get a little more (+120 fps) from the 22 inch barrel. Aside from that I don't have any preference.

WT, everyone who shoots should own one, or three. I bought my first one back in the early 80s my most recent about 12 years ago. ( a guide gun). None of mine wear optics, the guide gun does have ghost ring rear and a large ivory bead. The Sharps replica is a favorite with our prairie dog squad. It is just so much fun to shoot long range, set the rifle down, take a drink of water and see bullet splash. Hell sometimes I'll even hit something.
You will never regret owning one.

I love my 45-70. I finally have it set up exactly the way I want it, VXR 1.25x4 #4 Illuminated on a XS rail. Just a great rifle for all the reasons Jim mentioned. Shoots everything I have put through it into small groups and is just a pleasure to carry around.

Like Jim mentioned, an 1895 Marlin is a good one, as is a 1886 Winchester. Both of those two would make a guy smile.

If you guys keep talking like this, and I may end up with one. I need to pay off a few things first.

The two guys I hunt out west with both shoot the Marlin 45-70 Cowboy models, both shoot great and they've got the trophies to show for it. I had a guide model and stupid me sold it a couple years ago, I have one on my wish list for this year.

You can't go wrong with the model #1 too.

The Model #1 is saved for a different caliber. I need to save up and see what happens this summer. I also need to determine what is a fair price so I don't get taken to the cleaners.
