So Nosler... I'm seriously considering my .500 S&W revolver for my 2009 Maine bear hunt...

You fellows have any intention of making a .50 cal handgun bullet??? I'm thinking NOSLER Partition here...

Guy,

Your suggestion for a .500 PT is a good one! What are you thinking, 400 gr?
That would make for a serious bear load.

Something in that area, or perhaps down to 350 grains or so... I've had the big revolvers since S&W first introduced 'em and at this point it has always been just a range toy. Have never hunted with it.

For ammo I've limited myself to two bullets:

350 grain Hornady hollow point
440 grain Cast Performance flat nose

Mostly I shoot the 440's at about 1400 fps - which is roughly 200 fps below max. Makes for a very good load - easy to control, accurate and I think the half-inch diameter, 440 grain bullet at 1400 fps is tough enough for most chores! It shoots through big douglas fir stumps...

So I was really thinking of something about the weight of the Hornady, but perhaps tougher - like a Partition design. Dunno... The thing really doesn't seem to need much expansion.

Mine can use one....
