Preferred handgun hunting bullet?

It would be a 300 grain in the .44. Also keep in mind that frontal area adds to the killing power of handgun bullet. In addition, A Blackhawk can push a 300 grain @1,200 FPS. More penetration and bigger wound channel.

I’ve been using a lot of Montana Bullet Works WFN bullets for the 44 Rem, 480 Ruger and 500 JRH. They are very accurate and the WFN really seems to make bloody holes in stuff. For myself personally, I like the damage the WFN does and it almost guarantees an exit which is a nice touch for me.

This deer was shot with a 440 WFN at 950fps at 55 yards. Ran about 50 yards I’d guess but the blood trail was easy to follow.

What is your preferred bullet for taking game with a handgun? I just picked up the garmin and have started to think more seriously about some testing and doing a handgun hunt next season, most likly for whitetail.(and no Ernie, not one of your type of handguns :)) Choices I do have 6"GP100-357, 4"S&W 657-41mag, 6"DW Kodiak-10mm, 8"S&W-500.
Current bullet thoughts are Hornady XTP or Speer DeepCurl, but that is what I am looking for input on?
What game are you wanting to hunt? Do you have the bullets you listed or are you simply contemplating that brand/style? I cast my own. As several of us have stated, thats the way to go for a hunting bullet. The.500 and the .41 would be my choice for hunting.

The game I'd be starting on is whitetails. And actually over the weekend there was a local gun show and I picked up a another 41mag S&W 657 7-1/2" with a red dot, will add a couple pics later. But this will be the one I'm going to concentrate on for hunting, i do have a box of each the XTP and deepCurl for the 41, as for what i was looking for is if i should concentrate on one vs the other or in a totally different direction.
I have not worked with cast at all, and not sure that i have the time to get dug into it as much as I would need to.
Once comfortable hunting deer I could could see myself trying for elk in some local pistol only with the 500.

Load up both and see which shoots better. Nice weapon. Post the range results.
Agreed. Both are great bullets.

Montana Bullet Works is a great outfit for cast bullets. I use them for the 44, 480, 500 and my 50 1/2” Sharps. They shoot very well. Plus they are pretty hard so if you want the full effect of a WFN you’ll get it since they don’t tend to break apart.

Awesome 41 SF.. that’s cool as heck.

I like the Lyman #429241, Elmer Keith's bullet. Works great on long shots at jackrabbits, coyotes and the one deer I shot with a Ruger Super Blackhawk. I also have the RCBS #44-300-FN which is a 300 gr. gas checked bullet in the general semiwadcutter shape. About the only guns I can use it in are two Ruger Redhawks but I sitll need to get a couple of higher replacement front sights as the guns shoot about 6" high at 25 yards.

Edited to fix typo.

Paul B,
Do you mean Lyman 429421? I've had good accuracy but wasn't super impressed with their performance on deer. Definitely worked but if I use them again, I'm going to try and put it through both shoulders.
