.579" @ 600 yards!

Benchrest competition isn't my sport - but I do take note of advances and new records from time to time, particularly in the long-range 600 - 1000 yard events.

Recently at the Sacramento range a new 5-shots Light Gun record was set: .579" at 600 yards... Chambered in 6mm Dasher (derived from the 6mmBR) and using Varget along with Hornady 105 grain bullets... Amazing to me that such accuracy can be achieved at 600 yards, let alone with production bullets.

I'd love to see Nosler come out with a 6mm competition bullet - 105 - 115 grains... :grin: Our friends at 6mmBR.com have posted a short note about the group, and it should be recognized as an official record soon. I suspect they'll be publishing additional info about the shooter, his rifle, scope and load soon - they're real good about that.

I don't even know how that is possible?! Heck, at 100yds, I have a problem aiming at that EXACT point every shot.

Yeah - I posted this here - 'cause most of us hobby loaders & hunters really don't keep up with what the serious target shooters are doing these days - the heights of accuracy that have been reached are pretty amazing.

On a different kind of competition, recently a new record was set in NRA highpower competition, which includes 200 yard standing, 200 sitting rapid fire, 300 prone rapid fire and 600 yard prone slow fire - all with iron sights... A score of 800 is possible on the 80-shot course of fire, and the new record is 800 with 41 X's shot... Awesome... Not a single round out of the two-MOA 10-ring, and just over half of them in the one-MOA X-ring - with iron sights.

Luckily a guy doesn't have to shoot that good to have fun at matches - or I wouldn't bother competing! :grin:

M1 and M14 matches can be fun. There are some excellent shooters out there with their National Match rifles that are scary accurate.
I used to shoot the DCM in Camp Perry with the M1 Grand out to 600 yds.

I'm not taking anything away from the shooter or his group, but it appears to be a 'fluke'. The IBS record smallest 5-shot group at 100 yards was fired in 1980 @ 0.052". In 27 years, no one has been able to beat that group. With today's better barels, scopes, bullets and shooters - that tells me it is a fluke group. Had the 600-yard shooter had an aggregate of under 0.6", that would be something! Regardless, congrats to the shooter and to the sport.

Lone Star - I understand - and I had similar thoughts when the 600 yard record was set only last August at .94" - now it's cut again... I figured that .94" record would stand more than a couple of months! Things are moving right along in the world of LR benchrest.

Still, I'm just tickled pink when I shoot a .5" group at 100 yards! :grin:
