6.5 Creedmoor bullet for mule deer & cow elk

Well we got lucky and got our leftover cow elk tags in the Wyoming draw so looks like it's mule deer and elk for sure. Time to get to the range.

Congratulations! Indeed, time to prepare.

My 7 mag is making a strong case to leave the new 6.5 home. 140 AccuBond printed 3/8" at 100 and 5/8" at 200 yards at 3080 fps.

I broke the new 6.5 Creedmoor in with a box of Hornady 129 gr American whitetail. Shots 2 through 5 on a brand new barrel went in a ragged hole at 100. Printed three more groups in the 5/8 to 3/4 inch range. Unbelievable from a $20 box of factory ammo.

Also tried a box of Hornady precision Hunter 143 eldx. Those were about 7/8" to an 1"at 100 and 1 3/4 groups at 200.

I have a 22 inch barrel ruger American Predator so the velocity could be a touch better for hunting.

Going to order up some accubonds and try to improve on the velocity of the factory ammo and see if I can shrink the groups even more.

Thanks for all your help.

For sure, the 7 Rem Mag is a classic by this juncture. Hard to beat when it is hitting on all cylinders.

Gee, sorry to hear you cant shoot a nice deer at 310 yards. I guess the outfitter feels like he needs to impose some kind of limits. Wishing you the best.

I look at it the other way. He wouldn't be a very good outfitter if he can't get me closer than 300 yards on private land were you should be seeing 10 or more quality bucks a day. When you have thousands of dollars riding on the shot I'd prefer to keep it under 200 :)

For my wife's Creedmoor I load RL 17 with 129g ABLR, 2830 fps from 20 in. barrel. Max load from Nosler book, 1/2 in groups.
Did you get that velocity from a Chrono or the book test results? The factory 129 gr loads I broke my barrel in with said 2820 fps on the box but I was only seeing 2650 or so on the Chrono on my 22 inch Ruger.

Great shooting 7! That sucker is begging for range time!

RL17 works great with the 127-130 Bullets and 26 with the 140-147 class. 2950’ish with 130’s and 2700-2800 with the heavier Bullets. Easy case to load for.

I have two boxes of the 143 ELD-X I want to try out in the 6.5 Creed for winter season, I only have been slinging the 140 Hybrids at the range but no intention of using these for hunting. I am curious to see how it will shoot with the ELD-X.

Those darned Hornady ELDs have been good to me. I’m using the 147’s though. At 2775 they are amazing.

For the yardage and conditions that you are going to be shooting, it sounds like that Hornady ammo would work just fine on the deer and cow elk. Nice accuracy.

And your 7 mm is shooting great as well!

Best of luck on your hunt!

Other bullets worth considering for your applucation would also include the 140 gr SGK or Pro Hunter, or the 140 gr A-Frame.

Cannot fault either the 130 or 140 gr AccuBonds; great bullets, excellent accuracy in all of my rifles I have shot them in to date, and easy to find loads for/with. Their performance on game has been outstanding!

Sorry, I have not yet worked on handloads for my Creedmoor. The 143 gr ELDX worked great on a young bull moose at close range (20 yards) for me 2 seasons ago.

I’ve burned through probably 9 lbs of RL16 through four different 6.5 Creedmoor’s. It is my favorite powder for that cartridge. Temp stable like H4350 but more velocity. Have had good luck with RL17 as well. Those 129 grain hornady American hunters are also a fine shooting factory load. I believe I was getting about 2780 fps through a 24” barrel with that factory load. I switched to RL16 when H4350 was so hard to find. All the local reloading shops around me have H4350 in stock now, so it should be easier to find. I doubt I switch back to it now though. Also I believe any of the accubonds will be fine for Deer and elk at CM speeds. Also might want to look at the 120 TTSX also. I ran them last year with RL 16 at 2920 fps, and had excellent results.

I've had very good results with Superformance powder in my 6.5CM with 143s.

Shamrock: the velocity was checked with a Magneto speed chrony, book load velocities are usually very optimistic for the amount of powder they show. All of the Hornady factory loads were way slower than advertised, maybe because of the 20 inch barrel.

For inside of 300, sign me up for the regular 140 or 130 AccuBond. Pushed slow or fast they always deliver a beautiful mushroom and 70% weight retention. Just my .02.

Just a little information I have seen over on specialtypistols.com about the .264 Hornady 142 ELDX bullets.
A fellow who goes by WV HITMAN who is a dedicated pistol hunter and has just racked up his 2400th deer kill with a pistol. Yes that is two thousand four hundred. He has done crop damage control for years. He has pictures of huge amounts of game from all over the world he has killed with specialty pistols. He is a medical Doctor. He does extensive testing of bullets on game. His results of using the 142 ELDX out of a 6.5-284 specialty pistol on deer leaves a lot to be desired. Even at 200 to 300 yards this bullet can really come apart on a deer. One that he pictures at just over 100 yards looks like it has been hit with a varmint bullet. Bullet was found and only retained about 1/4 of it's weight. You may want to go on to this site and check it out. He is a 100% recommender of using Nosler AccuBond bullets for most anything.

That’s saying something if it can’t even hold together out of what I’m assuming is a short barrel.

Thanks. I just ordered a box of Hornady 143 eldx and 120 gmx solid copper because just about everywhere I looked online and locally was sold out or backorder of the nosler accubonds in 6.5. I'm worried I won't be able to get enough accubonds in time to test and load for my trip. I too am a little nervous about trying the 143 eldx but also it is hard to be overly critical of poor performance recovered from a Dead deer. But meat damage is something I'd really like to avoid on a cow elk. So I think I'm likely to use the 7 mag with accubonds to fill the cow tag.

Also I haven't had a chance to read the article but if he is doing crop damage he might be opting for the high shoulder shot to DRT the deer, where I typically prefer to avoid the shoulder which should leed to better bullet performance.

I have almost a pound of superformance I want to try with 143 eldx. What charge are you using? Hornady book says 44.7 Max, hodgdon website says 45.8 is Max for superformance.
