6.5 Remington Magnum?

I have a 6.5 rem mag and reload for another but neither is a factory rifle. Mine has a 26" Douglas barrel and the other has a 26" Shilen barrel. If you have a factory gun like the 673 then the load data I have will not yield the same results. Both of these guns are rebarrels of a 300 win mag action so I had them throated to seat the bullet way out
HPIM1162.jpg

However, I do use the 130 AccuBond, 130 Scirrocco and the 140 Sierra Game King (can't wait for the 140 gr AccuBond and have Midway on "notify" when they come in).

I shoot the 130 gr bullet between at 3100 fps + and the 140's between 3000 and 3100 fps. If you have a factory gun then your bullet will be seated deeper in order to fit the mag/action and you may not match my ballistics.

If you still want load data let me know.

Welcome to the forum, glad you found us.

I like the looks of that 6.5mm Rem Mag round! How does she shoot?

Hey JD

I like the 6.5 rem mag a lot. It is a lot like a 270 with a slightly better sectional density, maybe a little less recoil. It does have the belt but that doesn't bother anyone after fireforming so you headspace on the shoulder. I had a 264 win mag and found that to be a little too overbore for me and finicky. Also velocities in the 2900 fps to 3100 fps float my boat better than the higher velocities (keeps the bullet from doing squirrelly things on impact). Dies and brass are readily available if you don't mind Remington brass.

Mine was a rebarrel of a Browning BBR 300 win mag which had an extremely short mag but works perfectly for the 6.5 rem mag. No problems with feeding. malm (westpac) over on AR did the work and he did a good job

damn them flyers!

A perfect candidate for a short magazined 300 win mag rebarrel.

Great cartridge that deserves better than it has received. It looks as if you have done everything right with yours. You are right, those flyers are a royal pain.

Woods,

As JD stated, welcome to the forum ! The 6.5's are a great round.
I agree with what Nosler has stated in their last guide.... the "original short magnum"

What twist barrel did you end up using on your 6.5?

It has turned out to be my favorite Whitetail rifle with a McSwirly stock
DSCN1248.jpg

and a 4.5x14x44 Conquest RapidZ800 with a Microlevel
DSCN1246.jpg

it is comfortable to shoot and very consistant.

I got a 1 in 8 on my Douglas cause I really want to shoot the 140's but the other Shilen barrel is a 1 in 9. The powders are in the RL22 to RL25 range and I found some IMR7828SSC that I want to give a go. Definitely Fed215's though

Woods,

I was curiosu about that..... the 1 in 8 twist in that tube had aught to love those 140gr A bonds.....
Certianly keep us posted on those results....

I have a .260 with a 1:9 twist tube that loves the 130's

woods,

Nicely done! You have yourself one fine looking shooter.

I always liked the looks of the 6.5 RM. It is the same case as the .350 RM. Did Remington ever chamber the 700 classic in that caliber?

I'm just putting the 6.5 Rem Mag together now,on a 7mm SAUM ssBDL platform. The barrel will be a 8.5 twist 24" Pac-nor,in a Bansner stock.I have dies and brass already so it's just a matter of waiying for the barrel and it'll be ready to go. Monashee

Monashee,

Nice platform for a build. Should be a real shooter with the 130 gr AB and deadly on Caribou way out there.
Post some pictures of your rig when you get her put together.

My dad gave me 2 Model 600 Remingtons new unfired in factory boxes with hang tags for graduation. One is a 6.5 Remington and the other a 350 Rem and I have never had a chance to shoot either. Years ago when I was interested ammo was non existant where I lived. Now I see there is plenty of brass but am no longer interested in firing the guns.

Wow! You should be able to see those rifles without any trouble. Each represents a great cartridge, and the 600 had a reputation as a vicious little rifle, but you certainly don't see many on the used rifle racks. I see a few more now that the 350 RM is somewhat more available.

Nice!
Post some pics please.

You are starting out with a short action so you will not be able to load the bullets out as far. That means that I have a larger combustion chamber than you will have. Certainly not a problem but it will change the dynamics and powder/bullet combinations may not work the same. I would think that you would get better results by stepping down the powder combustion list to a slightly faster powder than I am burning and the data I give you will create higher pressure in your chamber.

I only tried RL22 and RL25 in my reloads but for your application I would think that I would start at 54 gr RL19 or 52 gr IMR4831 with the nod going to IMR4831 for best possibilities. Work up from there watching for pressure signs and watching velocities. You should be able to hit 3150 fps for a max but that will depend upon your gun. I got shiny marks on the case head of my friends rifle at 3190 fps. In my gun I have mostly shot the 140 gr bullets and have had no pressure signs up to 3098 fps.

One thing I have noticed is that in all 3 of the new barrels I have broken in is that the velocities are higher when new and I have had to back down the powder charge after the initial break in so I don't get pressure signs. I can't shoot this load in this rifle anymore
280AI020OFF614RL22.jpg

and am now down to 60.5 gr RL22 to get the same velocity.

Also this load
RL25-98.jpg

I am now down to 94 gr RL25 and getting the same velocity.

Maybe it's the RL powders.

Nice shooting for sure!

There is something to be said about Alliant RL powders. I too have several one hole groups in 280 AI and 338 RUM with RL 19,22, and 25 powders.

JD338

I find myself using RL powders more and more. They work well for me. From 25-06 to 416 WBY mag.

Acquired a 673 in 6.5RM, and a set of dies. Had no reloading experience and hadn't shot a rifle in years. Hodgdon and Nosler seemed to be the most generous with information, including the software-generated table above. So I started with H4831sc and tried several Nosler bullets. Hadn't good luck with the others but I now have a load that spits out 130ABs at 2850 fps to a 1-1/4" 5-shot group at 112 yards. (I just found out that the range is actually 112 where I thought it was 100.) The OAL is kept short enough to utilize the magazine, about 2.8". That's with 55 grains of powder and Rem 9-1/2M primers. More powder (55.5) makes 'em go faster but opens up the groups.

673: a Remington rifle made 7 years ago with a Model Seven action, a heavy 22" barrel and a light laminated stock.

Here to trade info on the 6.5RM. Was talking with a long-range target shooter the other day about the 6.5-284 Norma, which is highly respected in his circles. After some research, it seems that the only difference is that most of those are custom jobs, single-feeders that don't respect the standard OAL. With 3"+ rounds and 30" barrels, they can push 142s out at 3100 with incredible accuracy. Doesn't seem like anything that couldn't be done with the old Remmy.

Someone asked if Rem made a 700 in this cal. They did make a BDL 30-35 years ago, 24" barrel. They're kinda expensive nowadays on the rare occasion that you see one for sale.
