I have a new one in the flock - Mod. 70 LA 6.5 Swede with 24" barrel from Pac-nor. Was wondering if anyone had any real-world experience with the 3 powders mentioned and 140's?
I just loaded some 140 Accubonds with 7828SSC for my little 70 last night. So far I've only used H4895 for reduced loads and RL26 for the 120's, 130's, and 155's. Just sorta goofing around to see what the 140's will do with the 140 ABs.
H4350 is what I use in the 6.5x55. 120gr ballistic tip. 2850fps using nosler max load. My rifle is a old military with a long throat so I do not get published FPS. One bullet I have tested is the 130gr TSX. H4350 was real good with it. Shot them all up at the range, they shot so well.
Some Reloader 22 worked with these 140 grain Accubonds. This is about as good as it gets for this little Remington 700 Classic and the guy pulling the trigger.
Out of those three in your title I have only used IMR 4350 in a Ruger 77 MK II I used to own and it works well. IMR 7828 ssc also worked well. In my wife's Tikka T 3 we use the same load as baltz526 for deer (max load of H 4350 with the 120 gr Ballistic Tip) and it is really accurate. That load gets 2800 fps. H 4350 with the 140 gr SST and Partition gets around 2650 fps, the SST is very accurate and the Partition is good at those speeds but was more accurate at 2500 fps. Picked up some IMR 4955 to try next with the 140 gr Partition to see if we can get a bit more speed and maybe group a bit tighter.
Here is some data that I have, but not exactly what you are looking for. I have a CZ 550 FS with 20" barrel.
120 gr NBT, 47.0 gr IMR 4350, 2760 FPS, 1" (3 shots)
140 gr NBT, 51.0 gr H4831, 2760 fps, 1.25" (may be a tad hot)
140 gr NBT, 47.5 gr VVN160, 2745 fps, 1"
There are many that work well. I've used RL22/MRP and IMR 4451 to great effect with 140's. I haven't tried 7828SSC, although I have lots of it for my Weatherby calibers. I'm following any experiences with it with interest.
My best load using 140gr Partition in a Tikka T3 Lite was:
IMR7828ssc-51.1grs-3.104" OAL-2833FPS-SD16-----48.2grs gave 2657fps---sd10
Next best was:
RL25---53.2grs--2804FPS--SD18
Also used:
Hybrid 100-44.5grs--2677FPS--SD16 one of the more accurate loads--Another day-44.5grs-2665FPS-SD16
IMR4831--47grs--2713FPS--SD18-ALSO-51grs-2945FPS-SD11--Also 45grs 2630FPS-SD21(too slow)--Another day 47grs-2751FPS-SD4
IMR4350--45grs--2670FPS--SD21
H380-45grs-2761FPS--SD7
RL22-51grs-2785FPS-SD15 one of the more accurate loads. Also 49grs--2687FPS--SD10
Mag Pro-53.7grs-2833FPS-SD16- also 46.7grs-2467FPS-SD13(too slow)
H4831-47grs-2599 & 2592FPS--Too slow stopped shooting._Also 47grs-2595FPS-SD8(on another day)
RL19-50grs-2815FPS-SD20-Excellent accuracy--also 47grs-2616FPS-SD5
I also have loads tested for 120gr & 140gr Swift A-Frame, 120gr BT,100 &125gr Partition,100 &120 Barnes TTSX, 130grs Swift Scirocco and Nosler AccuBond. All load were recorded between 10-20' over a Ohler Model 33 Chrono.
I have used Accurate and IMR 4350 with 120 ballistic tips and Sierra SP and 140 Hornady interlocks and Sierra SP with great success. High velocity and bug hole accuracy. I am shooting them in a Mauser 96 with it's 29 inch barrel so my velocity will be higher than your 24 inch. Like one of the reloading manuals says, Feed the Sweed most any medium to slow burning powder and it will sing a pretty tune, or something like that.
Anybody have any experience with the Hornady 140 grain ELD Match in their Swede? Looking for a place to start from. Hornady said they didn't have any data but I may want to use the 140 AMax data as a starting point. I will be using these loads in my HOWA 1500.
Thanks,
Duane
In my Remington 700 Classics, I used the max loads listed in the respective loading manuals with IMR 4350 with the 140 gr NP and X Bullets and got 1" 5 shot groups at 200 yards
44gr IMR 4350 is your friend. My long time match load under a Hornady 140HPBT. Shoots to about the limit of the military sights on my M96 (sub 2 MOA to 300m). You can probably go a little warmer in your M70, consult Hodgedon online data. I'm using PRVI brass and Fed 210m primers.
4064 can be used with 140s, but it is better suited to 120-125 grain weights in the Swede.
The 6.5x55 has been a favorite of mine since 1984. Long before the 6.5 craze going on now.
IMR 4350 is one of the best powders, if not the best powder for this cartridge and 140 grain bullets.
You'll get top velocity and accuracy out of this combo.
As the old commercial used to say, "try it, you'll like it!"
Another powder VV560 loads 46 - 48 gr. with AB 140 gr. Coal 3.1 inch.
Next powder Norma MRP load 46-48 gr with Lapua brass and CCI benchrest primers.
VV560 is hotter and a bit faster. Personally I am sold on Norma MRP for 140 gr bullets. My rifle's barrel is 22 inch. Velocity 2650 FPS. You can't love this caliber!!
Just an update. I ran up several loads of IMR4350 w/ the 142gr Nosler ABLR this past weekend. Final load worked the best.
45.5 gr IMR4350 gave this for a 4-shot group @ 100 yards.
I'll load some more up to see if they'll repeat and run them over the magnetospeed.
