6.5x55SE 140 gr Accubonds - H4831SC - Fed 210 - Lapua

I'll be testing my swede this week with 6.5 staball. It only has 25 rounds down the tube. Accuracy beats velocity every time.
That sounds like a good powder, it's on the short list of powders I will test next whenever I get around to tweaking this load further. If this next range trip proves consistent velocity and sub-MOA 5-shot groups I'll be sticking with it for this year's deer season.

I finally got another round of testing in today. I decided to take the best performing powder charge from last session - 48.0 gr H4831SC - and experiment with some longer jumps to the lands. Those of you who said Accubonds like a .050" jump were right on the money. I had 3 COAL's at this charge weight that gave sub-moa 3-shot groups at 100 yards today. Of those three the .050" jump (3.100" in my rifle) gave the best velocity. I'm going to call that my deer load for this season and go back to fire a few 5-shot strings to make sure it repeats. That will leave me enough ammo to get a good 280 yd MPBR zeroed in and to hunt with. When I raise enough money to get another pound of powder and more bullets I'll continue testing to see if I can tweak it in even better. My velocity is at an average of 2732 fps so I'm okay with that. I think closer to 2800 fps might be possible, but I'd rather not batter my rifle. I can live with 2732, but the bucks won't be able to!
If it's shooting great, you're where you need to be. I wouldn't get too hung up on trying to make it faster if its accurate now.

The only thing to keep in mind, your COAL technically has no correlation to your lands unless you know what the COAL is when touching the lands. OGIVE is what I prefer to use for my point of measurement. When most say .050 they mean ogive from the lands. This would be refered to as CBTO. Another thing to consider when using COAL is some soft tip or ballistic tips can show a variation in COAL because of deformation in the tip that could throw your measurements off ever so slightly. Ogive is consistent with each bullet type.

It's the first thing I measure when starting a load with new bullets. These 140 gr Accubonds are on-the-lands at 3.150" in my rifle. At 3.100" I'm .050" off the lands and getting the results I want, which correlates nicely with the expert advice I have received from other more-seasoned handloaders on this forum.

Shot mine last night. Had all kinds of problem. I had just got the gun back from having the mag lengthened. Loaded 3 round couldn't close the bolt. Fiddled with it and couldn't get it closed. Unloaded it and it wouldn't close. Went to put it in the case and tried again and it closed. WTH. Couldn't get the athlon to record the shots. Couldn't get the scope focused. 45gn of staball shot the best.

I can say Vortex customer service is top notch. Sent them a email this morning and they emailed me back. Sent me a repair request and shipping label to send it back.

I always say a prayer on the way to the gun club and ask God to bless me with a happy and safe trip! Bad range days SUCK! I remember one day I went out to the desert to test some ammo I had spent a lot of time loading and it ended up being so windy that day. Man I was PISSED! I've learned since then to roll with the punches better and accept the lows with the highs, but there is many a slip twixt a cup and a lip and so many things can potentially go wrong on any given trip to the range. The one that makes me most upset these days is when some idiot with a howitzer style muzzle brake on a .223 sits next to me and every time he shoots it blows my papers off the bench. I can't stand those things, but I try to remain calm and respect other shooters. Hopefully he at least is a fellow NRA member.

That other handloaders on this forum who have more experience than me have indicated that AccuBond's tend to like a .050" jump to the lands. My testing has proved that to be true in my rifle as well.

Vortex emailed me yesterday my scope is fixed and it's on it's way home. I'll get some rounds reloaded with the higher powder charges from the QL request DR. Mike ran for me.

I'm still not a big fan of their stuff, but I think it's a mindset more than their actual stuff.. either way, no one can knock their customer service. It's top notch for sure.

It sounds like you're getting close with that 45 gr load. Somewhere in that neighborhood with Staball 6.5 should produce a nice accurate load that will kill like the plague and not accelerate throat erosion after thousands of rounds ensuring a good, long barrel life!

I have a bunch of rounds loaded up and was planning to hit the range, but my truck broke down and I have been stranded at home for a week now. Hopefully I can get it fixed this weekend and hit the range. I have a cheap Vortex scope on my daughter's tackdriver 10/22 build and a Vortex Venom red dot on my tricked out Ruger MKIV Hunter that works great. I don't have any problems with their stuff, but I prefer to buy Trijicon when I can afford it. Good luck getting all the wrinkles ironed out, hopefully your next range trip will be a fun and productive one!

Got my scope back and mounted. Went to the range with new loads from the QL request DR. Mike ran for me. 46 gns averaged 2811 with a es of 8 and sd of 3.5. 46.5 gns averaged 2832 with a es of 20 and sd of 9.4. 47.5 gns averaged 2890 with a es of 14 and sd of 6.5. Going to work around the 46 gn load. Don't need this gun to shoot 2900 fps.

Are you shooting the poor man's partitions? The 129 gr Hornady SP's? I have 100 of those, I was planning to hunt with them, but since I got onto the 140 gr Accubonds I'm thinking I will use those up with some AA3100 and N160 powder I have to fireform 100 fresh Lapua cases I have. I'm just going to load as mild as I can to stretch the powder, but maybe I'll get lucky and one of the two combinations will shoot good and I can maybe use it another time for a low recoil load to start my daughter on this rifle.

That 46 gr load is looking good, I hope the groups you were shooting reflected those nice ES/SD numbers! I got my truck running tonight so hopefully a range trip will be in my future this week.

Finished with my load for this gun. 46.4 gn of staball 6.5 averaged 2829 with a es of 16 and sd of 7.5. Shot a .400 group. Also seated the bullet .005 deeper. Dr. Mike thanks for running the QL request for me.

That's pretty good, the trajectory is very close to my 140 gr AccuBond at 2732 fps. Even at 500 yards, they are still well-matched. When I use the 100 Hornady 129 gr SP's I have to fireform my new Lapua brass I might have to get some Staball 6.5 and see if my rifle likes that combination too. I hope it performs well on game for you this year, I've heard many good things about that bullet and the nickname "Poor Man's Partition" says a lot! I expect that will serve you well in the hunting field.
