This is a Fusion 140gr. recovered from a caribou. Impact velocity was likely 2650-2700fps and the range to target only 55yds.

That bullet performed yeoman's service for you. Good recovery, by the way. The expansion and penetration should give confidence in that particular bullet.

I still worry that this bullet is a bit too tough for the 7-08 carbine in open country.

I'm pleased that it held up well on such a close shot, but those shots are pretty unusual on open tundra. Last year it zipped through a broadside caribou at 150yds without much expansion at all. I've got several loads to try with 120gr bullets when I get around to it.

Of course, time is likely going to solve it before I get around to it as my son is growing like the 14yo he is.... he's already expressing interest in a full size rifle for next season....in a .30cal.

That bullet performed very well. Try and talk him out of moving away from that 7-08. There's nothing my .280 can do that he can't do just as well with his 7-08 at any normal hunting distance. My newest gun is a .308, but if it had been offered in a 7-08, I sure would have gotten one in that caliber instead. Nice job and thanks for posting the pic.

I've become a real fan of the 7-08 as well. I'm not sure there are any better standard cartridges under .30 out there. I know had I discovered the 7-08 early on, I'd likely not have a .308 or '06...or even (sacrilege aside) a .270. I've never had a .280 but I don't think there is enough difference between the .280 and the 7-08 to really talk about under field conditions.

I'm thinking a full size 7-08 in a little better grade rifle is where it's at.

Great recovery!

A Model 70 Featherweight in 7x57 or 7-08 wouldn't hurt a kids feelings I bet.

Or even a Weatherby Vanguard S2 with a 24" barrel. Affordable well made full size gun with good aftermarket support. Easily upgrade the stock at a later date. I really do need to get a Vanguard.
