The temp was 58 degrees, overcast, calm wind, load data as follows.

94.5 Retumbo
Fed 215 GM primer
3.670 Col
200 AccuBond

This picture is of the 3 shot group I shot this morning with the way I normally hold the rifles when shooting from a bench. The bonus came via chrono results, very very pleased with the speed. The tear in the paper below #3 is from a staple. Not the tightest group I have ever shot but more than good enough for who it's for and not an elk in Oregon will ever know the difference. Thanks goes out to all who provided load info and I still have some other data to try but all in all I'm pretty happy.

That looks excellent Bill. Can't see any reason to go further. No elk will get away with the 200 AB at 3200. That is some serious HP buddy. Great shooting. I imagine that 300 gets your attention on the bench.

Ya know that is how I was messing up at the bench yesterday and getting the 45 degree groups. Yesterday I was holding on to the rifle (hand on the forearm from under neath) which I don't normally do. Now today I was not holding the rifle and this is how I normally shoot. When I say not holding on to the rifle I mean I'm only gripping the pistol grip portion and my off hand tucked under and squeezing the rear bag for slight elevation adjustments.

Oh you know you fired something but to be honest I don't think the recoil is bad at all.

Whatever you did Bill, it is working. Can't wait to see what it does for you this Fall. Now you have to figure out what your going to carry this Fall..

I have high hopes of it shooting as good as yours and Woddycreek's 300 rums, if it does I may have to keep it (dam you guys). Can't imagine the kick being any more than my 338-378 or 338 Lapua

Blame me all you want! Your welcome

Your on the short list my friend.

   Guess I'm still on that short list?

Why yes you are, it's not a bad place to be.

Bill,

Excellent! You have a very good load with nice speed and a low SD. Accuracy is more the adequaet for elk hunting. You might want to try seating the bullet a little deeper in pulling in that 3rd shot.

Now you have to take the 300 RUM out to get it bloody.

3rd shot might have been me or heat as all 3 shots were fired one after another. I still need to set the final POI so when I do I will take my time and fire 1 shot from a cold barrel every time and we'll see if it was me or the heat.

As sad as this sounds I most likely won't carry it hunting as my 8mm is 1st choice followed by the 350 rem mag, but who knows.

That looks very good, Bill. I don't allow my left hand to touch the rifle when shooting from the bench; it is for fine adjustment of the bags.

Mike that is how I normally shoot and did so yesterday. The day before (45 degreeish ) I think I was expecting more recoil than the gun has so I was holding differently.

I believe you may have diagnosed the source of your strange stringing.

I'm quite sure I have Mike. Do something different than normal one should expect something other than normal results, be it positive or negative.

Looks really good to me. I have a problem with the 5 th shot. I want a great group, to show here. So I usually tense up and forget to breath or hold the rifle differently. As the shot numbers increase, I would also expect a slight increase in group size. I find that my group sizes increase when my eyes close, in anticipation of the beating I am about to incur. A 300 RUM probably does have substantial recoil. You are well under a min of elk, that's what counts

My limited experience with the 300 RUM indicates that the cartridge can produce some excellent accuracy. The recoil is substantial, but not punitive if one works up to it. It is not a cartridge that I enjoy dancing with for extended periods at the bench, but it is not what I would call brutal.

For what little time I have spent with the 300 rum it seems to have the ability to be very accurate.

Bill,

90+ grains of powder heats the barrel up fast! Wrap a wet towel around the barrel between shots and try a 3 shot group. The barrel cools down pretty quickly. Another trick is rubbing alcohol. It pulls out the heat and evaporates.
