7 RUM loads

Jorey,

I had several good loads with the 7 RUM. The owner of this particular rifle wanted to shoot Berger 168 VLDs. 87.0 grains of Retumbo, 98.0 grains of US869 and 91.5 grains of 50BMG all gave good velocities and accuracy in this particular rifle. It is interesting that the best accuracy came below maximum charges.

Next thing you know he will sporting an afro and trying to be a fisherman!

Horrors! That could be catastrophic, warping the youngun' forever!

The 7mm RUM has a 1:9 twist in the Remington 700.

Jorey,

You have a great rifle platform, treat her good and run the 160 gr AB through her! Just buy seconds and save money.

Thanks, JD. In the not too distant past, I've toyed with getting a 7RUM in an SPS as a donor for a .338 Edge, after I waste the stock barrel. For me, I can't see much use for anything lighter than a 160 in such a large case. Those Brand B 180s would sure be something in a RUM, though!
Kurt,

I agree with you, the 160 gr weight is where its at. The 180 gr VLD would really shine at long range. Remington marketing wants to impress Joe Public, hence the 140 gr offering.

I think the sendero 7rum is a 1in 9.5 if im not mistaken. I've heard of some guys getting them to shot 180vld and others not being able to get them to stabilize. Good luck and let us know how it shoots.

Actually, Remington uses a 1:9.25 twist for their 7mm's. My error, I was thinking my 280 AI which is 1:9 twist.

7MM RUM 160 Nos. A/B 90 gr. RL25 fed 215 pri. OAL 3.6 CL 2.85 3333 fps 140 gr. Nos. A/B 94 gr. RL25 CCI 250 Pri OAL 3.6 3500 fps both bullets 300 yd zero POI within 3 " at the 300 yd zero. Combo deer and elk capable. Less than MOA out to 500 yds Rem 700 xcr 26" barrel. Ugly on antelope at 300 with the 140 gr.

Believe Rem uses 9 1/8th for there 7mm mags.

I shot the 168 and 180 bergers out of my 7 RM and they both shot exceptionally well, as with the amax.

I might just stick with the 160 AB that way I can punch through shoulder inside 500 yards if need be, and yes, I'll be keeping a definate eye on the "2nd" Jim :)

Thanks for the load data Mike and Greg.

Im still debating what bullet I wanna shoot, amaxs are nice because they are quite a bit cheaper and dont give up much of anything to the bergers in BC. However the 180 VLD looks very good on paper and will carry further then the 162 amax.

I will give Retumbo a try first, probly with CCI 250s as thats what I can find. Fed 215s have been like gold around here for years. I have 300 or 400 left but what am I gonna do when I run out and cant find any, dont wanna start over, so I'll start with what I have and know I can get my hands on.

I love the idea of a 140g NBT at 3500fps for antelope and deer for some reason as well

Yes it is a 1:9.5.

I have not tried the 180 VLD's in it. It does shoot the 160 Accubonds great at 3300 and the 162 Hornady SPBT great!

Hey boolit, are you some kinda rocket scientist or something??

7 RUMs a barrel burner?? Really?? I was not aware of that...hmmm tell me something I dont already know and I might be surprised

Have you loaded for one? Shot a barrel out of any? Anything to actually contribute to this topic? If not, then dont say anything at all.

Do not wait for a response Jorey.

Individual was "re-assigned" to greener pastures of the internet.

Now as far as the barrel burner remarks go for this and other cartridges we talk about here, I will quote one of my heroes the late Elmer Keith.

"To heck with efficiency, its performance we want!"

Lets face it, they are all barrel burners. It depends on how cool you keep the barrel.
I burned out a barrel once, a M700 30-06 that I used in competition. Put just about 6000 rounds donw the tube. The rapid fire portion killed it.

Here's the two loads I have for my 7RUM:
Primary:
Bullet: 150ET
Brass: Rem - trimmed to 2.83"
Primer: GM215M (of course)
Powder/charge: 91gn of Retumbo
COL: 3.655
Velocity: 3200
Groups: very nice -do a search and you'll find my target pic

Secondary:
Bullet: 160AB
Brass: Same
Primer: Same
Powder/Charge: Same
COL: 3.635
Velocity: Never checked it yet
Groups: Same

Yes my rifles are weird, as I'm finding the ET on some are the same COL or longer than the ABs

You fellas are right, I stand corrected. The Rem factory twist for the 7mm RUM is 1:9.5 twist.

I agree, most of us are hunters first, so burning up a barrel on even a rifle that is shot alot yearly, but usually slowly fired while at the range should take a whole lot of animals before the barrel needs to be set back or replaced. Just doesn't seem to matter if it takes a 1000 or 5000 rounds. We all spend our money where we want. It is akin to driving a cheap economy car when you would really rather drive a Corvette but don't because brakes cost more on the Vette! Lifes too short! Scotty

Fotis, Thanks. And I love the quote. As expensive as rifles are getting now a days, a guy can rebarrel and blue print his old action cheaper than he can buy a new gun!

Jorey I don't blame you one bit for being a 7mm freak, I love them to. I just can't get my head around this SICK obsession you have with the A-max, you need some help  I'll let you know next time I'm putting in an order for some "good" bullets and we can share shipping again. I do have some 160 AB seconds on my bench if you would like a few to try out sometime.

Wow Remmy you have a bonafide beam me up scotty laser gun in your hands sounds like to me! I have shot several of the 300 Rums and a couple of the 338 RUMs as well but I have yet to see a 7mm RUM or shoot one, I am a little jealous I must confess!

I would like to get a 7mm Rem Mag for several reasons though the STW and RUM have been haunting me, especially when threads like these pop up my friend!

Ah so many guns and so little time...

You better buy barrels two or three at a time. The 7mm rum kind of seems like a waste of powder unless you have a 30" or longer barrel.

I would bet that Jorey gets a bunch of use out of that RUM before it needs a new barrel. Once he finds a load, I don't see him putting a ton of rounds through the rifle.. I am looking forward to seeing if he goes AMAX or sticks with the ABs though! Scotty
