Oh man. This one is driving me nuts. There's a lightly used Rem 700 CDL with really nice straight grain walnut at the local gun shop.

This is the third time I've been in and handled it.

Perfect companion to my .25-06 700 CDL... Better looking stock. One of my favorite cartridges and I'm all set up to load for it. Dang...

Not sure I can actually resist this one. Particularly since it looks like my son is claiming the old family M1917 for his own after shooting a bear and a buck with it. He might leave me with no .30-06 in the house!

Guy

Guy,

Only one way to scratch that itch. A perfect mate for the 25-06.
Oh, don't you have a stock pile of 165 gr PT's?
Congratulations on your new CDL 30-06.

Happy New Year!

OH BOY !!!!!!!!!!!!!

A new aout-six for the new year. How do you like them apples?

Jim

Just do it! You work hard and once in a while a person needs something nice. I do recall you are working on house renovation for you and the Mrs. although she will probably enjoy it more than you will. You deserve it!

Man, I can hardly wait to see this new rifle! Give us a picture, Guy! None of us would ever think of enabling you, but when will you be posting a picture?

I hope you keep this one longer than the 721 you had (briefly) a while ago! :)

Any idea how old this one is? Does it have a real recoil pad, or the goofy Frankensteinesque thing the new ones are coming with?

Guy, It sounds like you've already made the decision now it's just a matter of making it happen

Sorry Guy but you'll get not contradiction here. 30-06 is my favorite rifle too and it seems your son while wanting to leave you without the old family 1917 has opened another door for you to maintain order in your universe with a new 700 CDL.

You know my Grampa used to say that whenever you went to get your drivers license at age 16, they ought to issue you a 30-06 and 50 rounds to go along with your new found responsibility and then this world would be rid of a lot more culls.

Something to keep in mind. If it was good enough for Gramps well its good enough for me. I currently have two 30-06s...and one of them is a 1917 as well.
Good luck Guy.

Don't do it. There's really no need for you to own another -06. Times are a changing and there are many other new cartridges which equal or surpass this antique. Remington can't build a rifle anymore also. Don't shoot worth a darn and that trigger is DANGEROUS!!

BTW - where's this store located?

Tried to find a link - the rifle was on gun broker for a while. It's at High Mountain Hunting Supply here in Wenatchee, Washington. The rifle was made a few years ago before Remington started putting those 3" thick recoil pads on their CDL's and (IMHO) wrecking the lines of an otherwise very nice looking rifle. Looks like a scope was mounted on it at some point, and I think it's the new trigger. No bargain either - asking price was $800 for the lightly used rifle, but I wasn't going to pay that.

Overnight - thought about it - and with the Wyoming tags to buy this month, I'm passing on the rifle. There's a lot of good .30-06 rifles out there. Maybe my son will get a new one when he graduates from college and moves away!

I do appreciate all the support though! You guys are indeed a bunch of enablers.

Guy

You're a good man, Guy, and far stronger than most of us here. Hey, we're pulling for the Wyoming hunt, too.

For $800, you could buy a new M70 Featherweight and be halfway to a VX II 3-9x40...

What BK said. Why settle for a used Remington, when you could have a new Winchester.

Here here! Now you guys are talking! A nice Featherweight or Sporter would be a sweet rifle, for a 30-06 anyhow. Scotty

Guy,

You already know I just bought a model 70 in 30-06, its the Ultimate Shadow version...Not exactly pretty, I don't like the looks of the stock, but it sure is a shooter. I'm gonna change the stock later...

My point is....for $700 you can be out the door with a new M70 (if you get the ugly plastic stock)
