7mm 120 gr Ballistic Tip-What's It's Application?

This bullet was suggested for big game by member on another forum who says he has shot a lot of game with it including neck shots on elk and moose. It was stated that the bullets jacket is thicker than other BT's and it's suitable for big game.

A whitetail buck was shot at a distance of 60 yds with that bullet from a 7mm-08. It's MV was 2950 fps. The bullet hit the deers liver and did not exit. There was some jellied up liver and intestines. The deer ran 50 ft and fell there.

Now this was a good result as we got the game. I am just questioning what the application of the bullet is that's all.

I understood that the 120 Ballistic Tip in 7mm was intended for more moderate velocitys such as the 7x30 waters. I've heard it's a great whitetail deer bullet in that caliber. 44 Man

7-30 Waters shooters have really adopted that bullet.

I used the 7mm 120gr. Nosler Ballistic Tip in a 10" Contender chamber in 7-30 Waters about 4 years ago. I was achieving a muzzle velocity of 2258 FPS with very good accuracy. I was fortunate enough to take 3 whitetails with this load and my cousin's husband took one also. All were one shot kills and bullet performance was great as long as the impact velocity was above 1800 FPS.

If I ever get a 7mm-08 I'd be really tempted to try this bullet on Whitetails.

My youngest son used it out of his 7m-08 last year for antelope. Complete pass thru no problems at 250 yds. This was with a lite load though so his velocity was about 2900fps.

I've been using 120 gr 28 cal. B-Tips ahead of 78.5 grs. of IMR 4831 in my 7STW for five years and have shot everything from muskrats to mule deer with it. This is not a load for the sustenance hunter but the results are nothing less than fantastic.

In 2002 I hit a large buck running away at 100 yards, the bullet entered at the back of his right hip hitting bone and then deflecting into the other hip. the animal went down and still required a shot through the lungs to kill it. I was impressed with the amount of damage done , the deer would not have lived long anyways but what is important to me is that the animal was taken quickly. This year our Gov't was handing out unlimited mule deer tags in certain zones as a way of reducing the spread of CWD. You had to harvest 2 anterless and turn them in, in order to recieve a buck and 2 more anterless tags. You could repeat this process as many times as you wished. I killed 5 deer in one day with the 120 grain ballistic tips all with one shot. Ranges from 178 to 509 yards. This load does ruin considerable meat but to me I don't like chasing wounded game. I would not attempt to shoot any animal larger than deer with this load as well. But if you like the idea of having one gun to use in my case that will do 95% of my rifle hunting this is sweet and recoil is minimal. Also in case you want to know I've shot this load out of a 24 inch barrel and the velocity will average between 3690 and 3717 fps.

Deer is my answer, used them in a Ruger 7x57 , was getting 3010 fps, and very sweet low recoil, 3/4 " groups on a good day , and one shot kills all the time. Also in a Sako 7-08 finnlite, better accuracy on paper, same result on 'Beasts'........ I love 'em.
