7mm Remington Mag and 150 gr Partition
Any experience for powder and acquired ballistics? (charge, accuracy and FPS)

I thought I was set on RL17, but now also looking at H1000 and H4831sc. (All supposed temp insensitive)

P.S. Sorry Scotty but I am going to try these PT 150s. The SD, B.C., trajectory, velocity and energy compared to the PT 160s and even the 160 NABs is too close for the Elk to maybe know the difference with good shot placement.

thanks Ahead of time

I do not think that the elk will know the difference between the 150 and 160 Partition bullet? The 160 gr bullets always shot a little better in my 7mm Mag and the velocity was pretty close. I have always used the 160 Partitions (since 1963) but I used the 7mm Mag as a long range deer thumper and not for elk.

For elk, I always went to my .30-06 (180 gr) or .338 Win Mag (225 gr).

Honestly, with the 7mag's low expansion ratio, that would eliminate any cosideration of RL-17 for my thoughts. Mostly due to low load densities. Other than that, the 150 gr. NPT is what I consider a good all around weight for most any 7mm/.284 round. Although there are instance's, I would still prefer a 160 or heavier.
Either of the other two powders would be worth a try, as would be RL-22 and 25, and so would be Retumbo if wanting to stay with Hodgdon's Extreme line.

I would try H1000 and retumbo first as they will fill case and provide more velocity.

Rl22 has always been great powder accuracy wise for me out of 7 mag, but I just don't like the inconsistency with temperature and lot to lot with alliants powders anymore.

My dad uses nothing but H4831 for his 7 mag with 160 gr. Partitions, so I don't know why it would not work as well with the 150 gr. Partition. I'd use the H4831SC now as it gives better loading density. IMR7828 might be a good one too.
Good luck and let us know how it shakes out for you.
David.

I am a huge Alliant fan, so RL22 would get the first nod from me. Now, saying that, I know you have H4831, so I would try that before I bought anything else though. I can't imagine you will have too much trouble making them shoot though Steve. You have a solid combo and once you get that barrel smoothed out a little, I bet it will turn in some very impressive groups. Your right though, the 150 PT's would be a great compromise in speed and bullet performance. I am going the other direction in my 7 and trying the 175 PT's. I wanna see what my old 7 will do with those!

2 loads I have used forever.

67 gr IMR 4831
72 gr H1000

Taken plenty of antelope and elk.

Scotty,
When I used to own a 7 Rem Mag I loaded and shot 175 Partitions. I think I still have some data if you want it. My gun was a Rem 700 BDL back then. Groups were tight. Can't remember all the data but it was in the 2860 velocity range I think. It was either RL22 or IMR 7828 powder.

That is where I am going to explore when I get home Don. I have an older M70 waiting for me to put a new stock on it, update the bases and rings and it'll get 175 PT's. I am thinking I should be dangerously close to 2900 with it and some powders I have around. I haven't ever shot anything with a 175 PT, but I know it has to sting a little! I would like for you to post your data buddy..

When I get home from work in a little while I'll see if I can locate the load data. Forgot to mention the barrel on the 7 Rem Mag was a 24" length.

Scotty,
I found the data, I believe this data is from the early stages of development as I do remember tweaking the COL to get it to shoot dime sized groups but didn't record the final COL. This data is from years 2000-2001.

7MM Remington Mag. 700 BDL 24" Factory barrel
175 Nosler Partitions
62.5 RL22
Remington Cases
Federal 215 Primers
Starting COL 3.240

Average 5-shots= 2,844 fps Chronographed in Colorado @ 5,000 ft elevation
Ambient Temp. was 60-degrees

Note: This load shot 3/4" groups in the first go round at the COL listed. Playing with the COL resulted in much tighter groups closer to a dime in size.

Hope this helps,

Don

I put a 175 Partition through this big ol' Wyoming bull about 10 or 12 years ago:

Back then I was using H870, but it was discontinued. My loads were churning up 2930 fps from the 24" factory barrel on my inexpensive 700 ADL. I probably should have kept that rifle. Everything I pointed it at died real quick.

After H870 became hard to find, I too switched to RL-22 and was still able to get close to 2900 fps with good accuracy. That long & lethal 175 Nosler Partition is one heck of a bullet.

Also shot the 175 Sierra SPBT - dang - that sucker is ACCURATE.

Been loading for 2 different rifles 160gr. ABs over top of IMR4350. Traveling
3,000fps .5 moa if I am on that day.
Both have 26" tubes :)

Blessings,
Dan

I have been using IMR 7828 SSC in my 7mm Rem Mag with 24 inch barrel. With 66.0 grs and mag match 215 primers, I have been getting about 3060 with the Partition 160 grain and good case life. This load is sub MOA and I don't touch it or hold my mouth different when I shoot it!

Great data Don/Guy. H870 was the heat in my old 7RM when I used to shoot it alot. I know there are better powders for it nowadays, but man, was it accurate and FAST! I think it is going to be alot of fun to play with the 175's again. Good idea Guy to try the Sierra's first before I have to really start with the 175 PT's. Might save a few bucks there! Plus, they will be good steel fodder!

Scotty,
I wanted to but never could get better than 2860 fps with the 175 Partition. Some of the powder offerings available today should get you close. Every gun is different. The gun I had, even though it was a Rem 700, limited me from seating the bullet out very far. As stated earlier the long projectile that the 7 MM 175 is gives you excellent long range capability with the BC.

Even better getting that thing to go 2900-3000 fps makes it a long range hammer. Someday I hope to have another 7 Rem Mag. Good luck in load development let us know how it turns out.

Don

2860 with a 175 grain Partition is pretty good, Don. I doubt the need for more speed in this cartridge when that amount of mass is moving at that velocity.

Dr Mike,
I agree. Back then that load worked fine for me. I was at max load for my gun and I believe it was Nosler max by the manual too. I no longer have that rifle, went to the 300 RUM. The 7mm caliber can be real shooters too.
